They pay taxes but do not vote. Nor do they accept social insecurity (in general). I am not sure if they are exempt from paying into the SS system, though.
The orange triangles do not interfere with their ability to practice their religion and they are necessary to protect the rest of us from the trauma of hitting one of their buggies and hurting their children. I lived near them for many years. I felt that I could not use some of the roads that I helped pay for after dark because I could not see them. They load their buggies with their children and hit the road regardless of how light it is outside.
They are exempt from the draft because of their religion, but if my Catholic sons tried that tact, it would go over like a lead balloon.
There is nothing special about them, after the romance of their lifestyle ceases to be a novelty. After you live among them for awhile, you notice that they are not very friendly but they are happy to take your money at every turn.
