So, suppose he hit poor Laci one really hard whack in the head. Seems like there wouldn't necessarily have been blood flying out, from that, right? OTOH, if he hit her repeatedly, seems that there WOULD have been blood flying about, right?

No it wouldn't necessarily produce blood. The cranium is a closed cavity filled with tissue but enclosed by bone. Only if he had her with something sharp enoough to go through the skull should there be any blood.!
