"I think Torre needs to take Rivera out after this batter."

Naah. Psychologically, Rivera cuts their heart out tonight.

There were two Negro League teams playing on a ML level in the 1940s (KC Monarchs, Homestead Grays).

Which is, of course, two more than are playing at the major league level in the Japanese Leagues today... that is, if we buy that premise which I do not necessarily buy. Robinson and every other player who had been a solid veteran player in the Negro Leagues made a seamless move into the major leagues. Think of Satchell Paige, Monte Irvin, Larry Doby, Robinson himself. By the 1950's the Negro Leagues were not much more than a minor league.

There have been many longtime Negro League players who are among the best at their positions in the history of the game. I speak, most significantly, of Josh Gibson, Oscar Charleston and Paige (see above)..... and yet, there was no controversy about who the ROY should be at that time.

Mo's breaking bats again. You know that any corkers leave the corked bats in the dugout when they face Mo.

BTW, congrats to the Yanks tonight. As a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan, I am torturing myself by watching a game that I know should be being played in Wrigley Field..... :-(

Well, of course that's a factor, and I certainly understand what the team went through that year. It was awful, and I teared up a lot, watching Jack Buck's post-9/11 PA announcement when the season resumed. It was beautiful.

Not being a Cardinals local, I only hear him when paired with McCarver, who really irritates me.

I realize it was an extremely emotional season for him and the team, in several unbelievably tragic ways. I would have liked to hear a more neutral announcing job, though, given that it was a network, not a local, broadcast. Not a big deal, and I know that what his family, Darryl Kile's family, and the team and fans went through that year was more important. I meant no disrespect.

Nice win tonight. The Yankees owe Jeter big-time. Taking Beckett out was THE turning point.

Yankee pitching has been dominant again. It's Clemens turn to continue the trend.

See y'all tomorrow night -- thanks....

Taking Beckett out was THE turning point.

Maybe McKeon was wary of Baker/Little syndrome -- that he would be roundly criticized by the media if the Yankees got the go-ahead run against Beckett. Probably not, though. McKeon seems to march to his own drummer.

Paige never won a Rookie of the Year though most would agree that he was, at worst, one of the top twenty pitchers of all time and possibly one of the top ten (I think that that put him in the top five are overrating him). I think that only Bob Gibson would compete with him for the mantra of "greatest black pitcher of all time".

Oh, yeah and you missed Hideo Nomo winning ROY.... and he was the first Japenese import before Matsui, Sasaki, Suzuki or even Hidecki Irabu (blech! to Yankee fans, I'm sure).
