"But this much is clear: The Schiavo case has changed everything. Our government leaders have been put on notice that tremendous numbers of people in this country are determined to halt the erosion of the sanctity/equality of life ethic in the practice of medicine."

Traditional medicine is on notice. Hopefully their charades as god will be more easily questioned and judges need to realize that their opinions are just that and will not have traction when it comes to arbitrarily killing disabled people.

I think you will see a trend in the legislature fighting back. Hopefully these politically motivated judges will be corrected through this.

The liberal media sees this as beneath them to cover. Besides immorality and death is what it endorses.

What Terri's parents should do is write a book about this OR have a movie made and circulate that.

I'd like to see such a book go into some detail about legal aspects. Way too few people in this country understand that it means nothing for a case to go before dozens of appeals courts if the trial court judge is corrupt, biased, or insufficiently knowledgeable to fairly and accurately decide a case.

You can react from your understandable pride in your grandson -- or your outrage at someone such as the Florida woman's husband. And call for diluting any principles in the Constitution, such as the 10th Amendment, out of your emotionally wanting a solution to such turmoil.

That doesn't make such gutting of safeguards into something proper. Words to that effect, which the real Lord Chancellor would have agreed with (IMHO), were written by Robert Bolt for the character of Sir Thomas More in "A Man for All Seasons," to respond to a sanctimonious son-in-law:

And when the last law was cut down and the devil turned round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast - man's laws, not God's - and if you cut them down, and you're just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? ... Yes, I give the devil benefit of law for my own safety's sake.

The 10th Amendment was once planted thick, at the end of the Bill of Rights, as a bulwark against the abuses of centralized power. Do you want the last tattered scraps of it uprooted, so that you can feel better when you contemplate your new grandson? The winds won't bode well for his future. Not even for ours.

I admit that I don't know the specifics of this case, but my wife knows to never keep me alive with a feeding tube. I hope that this intervention doesn't mean people will have no choice in this matter.

I'll never understand this martyr act that people insist on playing. How in the world do you know what your brain will be thinking in a situation like this? Most human beings want to LIVE, and will fight to live until the bitter end.

Because I know and have worked around these patients, and I know that is not how I choose to live or something I wish to put my family through. To each his own...and that is my own.
