TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Senate President Jim King said Monday he would propose legislation that could save the life of a severely brain-damaged woman whose feeding tube was removed last week by her husband's order.
King, R-Jacksonville, said the measure would give Gov. Jeb Bush the authority to order that the feeding tube be reinserted to keep Terri Schiavo (pictured, left) alive.
The tube was removed Wednesday following a decade-long court battle between Schiavo's parents and their son-in-law, who said that he is carrying out her wishes not to be kept alive artificially.
"If we are to err -- because time is of the essence -- for goodness sake, let us err on the side of caution," King said.
King said lawmakers likely would take up the Schiavo issue this week during a scheduled special session regarding economic development issues, but he didn't know when.
Meanwhile, Schiavo supporters are praying outside the state Capitol, asking for intervention from state leaders.
Vigil leaders insist Gov. Jeb Bush has the legal means to step in and save Schiavo, but has refused to do so. They are planning to move their vigil to the front gates of the governor's mansion Monday evening.
Schiavo has been in what doctors call a vegetative state since her heart stopped in 1990 from a suspected potassium imbalance.

I have a related question proposed by someone I was talking to....couldn't we ask Terri to blink twice (or clap, etc.) if she is feeling pain, or whether or not she want to die?

"couldn't we ask Terri to blink twice (or clap, etc.) if she is feeling pain, or whether or not she want to die?" The husband and his planted goons probably wouldn't allow that either.

I don't know, yonif. I tend to think that a husband who won't let Terri's parents visit might not agree to much of anything. From here, it seems he's h*ll bent on having her die. I hope it can be stopped.

Surely greasing the palms of the biomedical "non-profits" with taxpayer funds can wait for a simple stay of execution pending investigation.

THIS WEEK? WHAT? Why not NOW? She's been without food or water for like 5 days now. How much longer are they going to wait before something is done?

I envy you your naivete. Whether Terri is conscious or not is not the true issue in this tragedy, because the court has decided she is not conscious regardless of any evidence to the contrary. The governor of Florida has prostrated himself to a corrupt judge, and Terri is being executed by judicial ruling. Nothing else is relevant. It wouldn't matter if Terri turned to soemone and asked for a glass of water, the Florida 'system' has decided to execute her so she will be starved/dehydrated to death. Period.

If they don't hurry up and do something she might end up more brain damaged than she already is.

If they don't hurry up and do something she might end up more brain damaged than she already is. She's probably in significantly worse shape now than one minute ago.

They are hopeing she will die before they have to do anything, so they can avoid the issue all together. That is our political leadership in a nutshell.

"If we are to err -- because time is of the essence -- for goodness sake, let us err on the side of caution," King said. Ok....the session was today, and at the very end they were exorted to" stay close by where they could be called in at a moments notice." I remember hearing that and wondering at the time.
I just emailed him and thanked him for taking action but that I WANT THE SESSION NOW!!!TONIGHT!!!. I think they do call them in at night don't they??

I'm keeping an open mind though, because I just saw this. Maybe they're trying to time it so that it'll pass when she's alive but truly is terminally vegetative, so then they can claim she was like that all along.
