LOL, I wish you both the best, sincerely. You are my favorite authors...

Does the 'reader' come when I buy a book?

Have you finished EFAD yet? I'd love to get your take on Ranya, and the last two chapters.

Some books are in Adobe Acrobat format, and the reader for that can be downloaded to your computer for free at www.adobe.com . Other formats include Microsoft reader, and that one I don't know about. I'm sure that there would be information on the site that you buy and download the e-books from.

Jeff, can you give us a paragraph on what "readers" mean in the Ebook context?

Saved Jeff's book to my desktop, and have been off-line reading. Hooked again! Ha!

Do you need to put it to a high magnification % to read on computer text? I usually read Word at 150% now.

I have my whole system set to large fonts. If you go to 'Display' in the 'Control Panel', under 'Appearance' you can select Windows [large], and everything doubles in size.

There is another setting where the fonts are doubled but I can't remember what it is. I had a computer tech come out and set this new computer for me.

I was one of the reviewers while Matt was writing it. It is a great book, beginning to end ... needs to be read (and understood) by all of us.

Also, I just ordered the finished version directly from Matt ... hopefully one of the signed copies ... As an EFAD fanboy, I would want nothing less ... :)

After I get the 2nd edition "put to bed" I'll get with Jeff to put it into an Ebook format.

Then I might also put it into CD format, since they are also cheap to produce and mail out.

Be careful with any CD format; easy to copy!

Yeah, it would be easy to lose control. I can see tables full of them at gun shows that I don't see a dime from. But can't anybody take an Ebook and put it onto a CD and do the same thing? I guess the copyright laws would be the only protection there.

I burned your book on a CD, just so I would have it if something happened to my system again! Took about 1.8 megabytes. Going to put Jeff's on with it so I have everything available, in case.

Somebody who sells at gun shows asked me about putting it on CDs, I can see the pros, but I can also see totally losing control that way. I mean, how does one keep track of royalties if folks are just burning a hundred copies to resell? OTOH, any publicity at this stage is good, because the "saturation level" of this book is I think over a million copies, and lots of those folks will want the paper book on the shelf.

Ebooks have protections built in and it is more or less programmable.

You can indicate if the book can be copies...from part of it , to all of it, and how long the copy remains active (or viewable).

You can indicate whether pr not any of it can be printed.

You can indicate whether or not it can be shared and to how many people.

Etc., Etc.

Normally, copying and printing are not allowed.

This is all controlled by the reader which looks at the encoded security of the document and then reacts accordingly.

There are two major readers and both of them are free. Adobe eBook Reader (which is different than Acrobat Reader) and Microsoft Reader.

Adobe is the most popular.

You can sell CD's with the eBook on them...but the eBook would be subject to the same security limitations built into the book once it was opened and on their computer. If the CD were copied...you may run into a problem, I haven't tried it and do not know if the file is set up to disallow CD copying...so I would be careful with that route. Most people control it through the download process where the file ends up on your computer at which point the protections work just fine.

I have links on my order pages to both the Adobe and the MSReader eBook readers.

Hope that helps.

That sounds great Jeff, thanks. I think for now Ebook is the way to go, both Adobe and Acrobat, and skip the CDs. Once the 2nd edition is printed, that should be the final Ebook version.

BTW, check freepmail.
