Well here in Germany i´ve an article(i think it was on spiegel online) about german exchange students being humiliated in the USA, because of our opposition against the Iraq war. According to this article they were harassed by their teachers and their guest families. A lot of them wanted to go back to Germany as soon as possible. Seems to me like rascism is a problem everywhere.

Racism? I would hardly equate disagreement with a government's policies (as in German opposition to the liberation of Iraq) with racism. It wasn't some irremediable aspect of deutschtum that people were objecting to, it was identifiable and openly expressed opinions.

And, truly, hearing Germans complain about racism is risable given Germany's history in the 20th century. (and I say this as one who has admired German culture and language, and has studied German philosophy and literature, Geisteswissenschaft if you will, from Kant, Schiller and Goethe through Heidigger, Ernst Cassierer, the Manns (both Thomas and Golo), Hesse, Grass, Brecht & etc.)

There is a Japanese proverb to the effect that the nail that sticks up gets hammered down. The society is incredibly hierarchal and 'face' driven, and being anything other than 100% pure Japanese is seen as dishonorable. It's a very strange society. Lovely in many ways, and charming, brilliant and talented. But, very, very deeply racist. They and the Chinese are possibly the most racist peoples on the earth.

You don't seem to understand what constitutes "racism". Which is amusing, all things considered. ;D

I have been on the receiving end of some horribly rude remarks about my country, from ignorant Europeans, but I can hardly consider their words to be racist.

I read this in the Japan Times paper edition last Thursday. Some Japanese still blame America for stopping their aggression in WWII. Many have no Christian virtue. They are slaves to their sadism and vengence.

The article just above this one was about a 23 year old Japanese who was caught when he brought his young kidnap victim to an internet cafe.

That's not rascism; that's nationalism.

Someone teach the child (and the ignorant teacher) that W. Edwards Deming, still largely revered in Japan, wasn't 1/16th American he was 16/16ths American.

Indeed, the primary reason for the resurgence of Japanese industry wasn't their culture, it was General MacArthur buying into Deming's theories of management and statistical control. He requested that Japanese businessmen give Deming a hearing. Here their culture helped, MacArthur's "request" was taken as a virtual order since he was in charge.

Deming was right, the "Taylorism" used in American plants was 100% wrong when dealing with even a semi-educated workforce, and Japan caught up to and passed us. Once American companies began using Deming's principles, our own cultural advantages over Japan (innovation, willingness to think sideways, adaptability) kicked in and the difference shrank dramatically. Japanese manufacturers maintain American plants not only for shipping/political reasons, but because American workers are better at generating ideas for improvement.

Question: Isn't the kid an American citizen by birth?

Only if he was born in the United States or U.S. territories or born to American parents living outside the U.S.. Poor boy. Japan has as high a whacko rate in their schools as we do in ours. The difference is that ours tend to be fearful nincompoops (zero tolerance) and theirs tend to be sadists.

" Japan has as high a whacko rate in their schools as "

Japan has a high whacko rate PERIOD ! I've been here 18 years ; I oughta know !

Racism is still rampant here . I would guess that 90% of Japanese wish that all the gaijins here would just disappear forthwith . The remaining 10% are mostly young women who are hip and aware and know the average Japanese man is a jerk , and long to meet their dream gaijin !

Interesting whine.
Well, belittleling and lecturing a country which defeated you utterly, and saved your ass, then sending your kid to that country to be educated, seems to me to be the ultimate in unconsciousness and arrogance.

Is it true that Japan-born Koreans who have been there for generations are not allowed to vote or are they simply ostracized socially?

Or a "Zen Buddhism: Religion of Peace" thread. Clearly all Zen Buddhists must thereby be the enemy of civilization.

My Japanese teacher in college had married an American man in the 1950's. She warned us all about Japanese men, "If you ever go to Japan, don't fall for any of them; you'll regret it!"

If they are naturalized they can vote in Japan . And yes , to a great degree they are ostracized socially .

A Japanese buddy of mine was in love with a Korean woman a few years ago , but his family vehemently opposed a potential marriage , and they broke up . My pal is still single at 50 .

She was 1000% percent right on . And they are the vainest men with the least justification on earth .

I lived there for nigh on ten years.

What I hoped that someone would point out is that there was no public outcry, no one raising hell about this outside of the courtroom.

I worked with Japanese Students for several Summers at a mountain resort. I really liked them but there were a few things which were not so endearing.

They would join in their own group and plot minor infractions and then do so as a group thinking they were fooling us.

The funny thing is the Americans caught them secretly and never did anything about it. The Japanese would have been humiliated it they knew that we knew they were not as clever as they thought.

One to one and person to person the Japanese are pretty nice.

Get them in group, however, and they reflexively think and act in a group. They pride themselves on their ability to alter their opinions and behavior to adjust to group dictates. This quality is called makoto, which translates as "sincerity," but, like so very many other things in Japan, the meaning in Japanese is the precise opposite of what it means in English.

For them, being sincere doesn't mean sticking by your principles or being devoid of guile. It means suppressing your self for the sake of the group and acting accordingly.

There is a world of difference between being berated because of political differences and being harrassed because of one's genes.

At his forum, engaging in the former is one of the reasons we post here, while engaging in the latter is a sure way to get banned.

It's the American way!
