I don't understand why her husband doesn't divorce her and leave her and her family alone.

Probably because both of them were adults when they married, and he assumed all that "cleaving" language of his marriage ceremony actually fostered the creation of a new family that wasn't dependent on the Schindlers to make decisions for his wife anymore.

Imagine that - a married man believing that he could make the decisions that affect his financial and personal life without his inlaws being able to run to a ridiculous legislature.

Imagine this ... a married man who has spent the bulk of the funds earmarked for his dear wife's medical care in an attempt to starve her to death ... while shacking up with another woman and fathering (2) children outside of his loving marriage.
