Unfortunately, I don't see a major reformation of Islam on the horizon. Nor will we win their "hearts and minds". The best that can be hoped for is to show them that they don't have to kowtow to dictators while they pray to allah, and hope that as they back into the modern world, their desire for affluence and modern amenities over-rides their desire to kill infidels.

In the meantime, non-muslims need to be educated about the nature of this religion so we can stem the tide of conversions.

I believe that one of the reasons that Islam is becoming so popular in many third world countries has to do with its subjugation of women. As the traditional roles between men and women break down in many non-muslim 3d world countries, due to modernization of those societies, Islam gives the men one last chance to hold onto their place in society. Islam and Sharia law appeals to them because it clearly defines the woman's place as a second class citizen and the property of the husband. It also gives them a crutch on which to hang their hate for those that would upset this balance (meaning in most cases--us).
