When they write the account of the 2004 campaign, it will include at least one word that has never appeared in any presidential history: blog. Whether or not it elects the next president, the blog may be the first innovation from the Internet to make a real difference in election politics. But to see just why requires a bit of careful attention.

HA!  Newbie latecomers.  FreeRepublic.com is and was the best political blog before the term blog was even invented!

The Dean campaign engages hundreds of blogs without policing who says what when, or who is on-message how much of the time.

If, by any chance, some enterprising FReepers want to put this statement to the test, here's where you can go:

Dean's is more of a bludgeon than a blog. He has hired staff to write it, and it just gives rosy statements about what he thinks or bad things about Bush. A much more apt title would be "Dean's Staff's Blog". There is nothing wrong with it, but it is not a blog.

If some candidate would really get down to actually blogging (honestly writing about events and issues of the current day, sharing things that are important to them or giving their opinion on a very recent event), it would actually be a good thing for their campaign. But the handlers would never let that happen. Can't let the true opinions out there because one of them might offend someone important.

Handlers would never let them do that because the candidate has to spend every waking minute raising funds.
