I know that...must of been a very special group of soldiers. I talked with my son who is with the 101st this morning and he knew nothing about any 101st being anywhere but in the Mosel area.

That was so great! My son is in the Navy and has been deployed due to get back today. Just as I finished watching the tribute my cell phone rang. It was him they just got back. He is the fourth generation in our family to serve. We are so proud of him and all the other heros that serve today for our great nation. God bless them all!!

Not really a good analogy. The Soviets in their defeat in Afghanistan suffered a rate of 3-4 killed (all causes) a day or roughly 25 soldiers a week. More than us but not a horrible death toll either, esp given that we are 15 to 25 years beyond that with more technology, personal procection systems, etc. Currently we are suffering 3-6 deaths a week to hostile fire (not counting accidents) and around 40 wounded a week. This is not militarily crippling by any means, just as the Soviet losses were not militarily devestating. The impact, over time, is one on moral in theatre and at home. The Iraqi insurgents cannot defeat us militarily, everyone knows that, but they can sap our will if they can keep it up over the long haul. This is about will, not casualty rates. Another example is the Isreali occupation of S. Lebanon from 1982 to 2002. The IDF's casualty rate was far lower than ours, but over 20 years Hezbollah and its allies never quit and eventually Israeli public will dropped to the point that Israel unilaterally withdrew. The reciept for defeat in Iraq is clear and it all hinges on the American home front. Iraq, as long as the insurgency continues, will be a topic in the 2004 presidental race. If Presidcent Bush loses in 2004, I'd expect, if the fighting continues into 2005, for the new Democratic administration to begin a withdraw from Iraq and a hand off to the U.N. The U.N., as it is known to do, will mess up and cut and run, leaving who knows what running the place in 2006 or 2007. It's all about national will, not casualty rates, and the media is doing a good job in aiding the enemy in how they report this stuff.
