I can't read his motives, and I can't put myself in 1790.

I thought that one of the biggest things that conservatives criticized the left for was wanting to be judged based on intent rather than results.

You have to look at the whole man and the whole basket of fruit. Clinton was rotten in every way. John Jay was good in many many ways - he did much good, and he was a man of honor. Clinton was a vile miscreant. If you can't see the difference, I can't help you. Some founders had blind spots on some things (like slavery) because all men are sinful and all men fall short, however, God blessed them and this nation anyway because they honored Him. You and I have blind spots too - because we are sinners.

IN fact, it is because of the sinfulness of man that we have 3 branches of government and an electoral college. Just as power cannot be trusted with one man, the majority cannot be trusted to rule directly. They said it over and over. YOu can thank them for your freedoms. Freedom is rare in this world, and the only notable freedom in modern times came with the Reformation which tranformed northern Europe and the USA.
