AN AMERICAN diplomatic convoy was bombed in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, the day after the United States vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution that would have condemned Israel for building a security fence in the West Bank. Evidently, terrorists remain unconvinced that the United States is serious about the war on terror. How could they get this impression? After all, we have removed the Taliban and Saddam Hussein from power.
With all that has been accomplished in the war on terror, those who in darkness plot attacks against the United States remain unafraid. They fall into one of two categories. Either they believe that America is incapable of finding and defeating them, or they believe we can catch them, but they are fanatically willing to fight to the death for their cause.
Only one response has any chance at stopping terrorists of both persuasions: relentless, unwavering, overwhelming pursuit. To stop those terrorists who are capable of fearing the United States, we must make them feel fear. To stop those who are fearless, we must physically engage them.
We cannot dig up these vile weeds without resources. President Bushs request for $87 billion to fight the war on terror may not be perfect in every detail. But there can be little question that even this amount will not be enough to finish the job.
On the same day that the American convoy was bombed, Democratic presidential candidates John Kerry and John Edwards announced that they would vote against Bushs request when it comes to a vote in the Senate. To his great credit, candidate Joe Lieberman took the opposite stance.
Kerry and Edwards are grandstanding, trying to win over the left wing of their party by showing that they are not afraid to stand up to President Bush. Never mind that keeping the war on terror partially funded will make this country less safe. Never mind that our unwillingness to commit overwhelming resources to this fight emboldens the terrorists and allows their networks to grow and strengthen. Never mind that we are in a real, live war with an enemy that does not know the meaning of compromise.
That some Presidential candidates are willing to play politics with this life-or-death issue of national security is disgusting.
Where would they ever get THAT idea?
