More than three years after the collapse of negotiations with Palestinian Authority and the outbreak of violence, Israelis are voicing increasing skepticism over the road map and the creation of a Palestinian state, a poll released Tuesday shows.
Asked what the best thing the US should do to promote peace, only 17 percent said support the road map, compared to 26% who prefer alternatives which will maintain Jewish sovereignty over the Land of Israel, 24% who said play a less active role, and 23% who said encourage regime change in Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Syria. Ten percent of the 500 people polled by the Smith research company had no opinion.
Still, 40% said they had a somewhat or very favorable reaction to the road map, compared to 31% who were somewhat or very opposed; 29% had no opinion.
Asked what would be the most likely result of the creation of a Palestinian state, only 15% said it would usher it a new era of peace, 39% said it would quiet the situation somewhat, while 31% said it would threaten the existence of Israel, and 11% said it would encourage terror attacks; 4% of those polled had no opinion.
The poll, which was commissioned by organizers of the Jerusalem Summit, had a margin of error of 4.5%.
Less than 1 in 3 have a clue. I give Israel about the same odds.
Less than 1 in 3 have a clue...
It is a little bit better than that: 31% said it would threaten the existence of Israel, and 11% said it would encourage terror attacks makes total of 42% or 2 out of 5 people. Still I agree with you premises. IMHO, delusion in Israel runs high. I think it can be explained with the frog in boiling water analogy. In the attempt to emulate normalcy, they sadly got used to slow rising level of terror. Paradoxically, unbelievable effectiveness of their security forces and vigilance of the security guards, bus drivers and populace in general, prevents many (I read 3 out of every 4) terror attempts, making the situation a bit more tolerable.
It is an awful thing to get used to terror.
