U.S. Rep. Greg Walden saw the negative side of the U.S. campaign in Iraq, but he also chose to report the positive.

The Oregon Republican returned from a visit to Iraq last week in a C-130 transport plane that carried the flag-draped bodies of three American servicemen, he told a crowd of about 100 at a Rotary Club of Greater Bend luncheon Tuesday.

consumers who prefer negative stories bear responsibility.
Responsibility means suffering consequences for failure. We-the-people bear the responsibility for the consequences, good and bad, of our government. That is why we should, and rightly do, have a vote in the selection of the officials of the government.

The fundamental problem is that journalism profits from the government failures and the consequences which bear negatively on the people generally. To the extent that journalism is influential, therefore, it tends to exacerbate whatever problems may at any time exist.

Classic example is the Rodney King riot, costing billions of dollars and scores of lives. Journalism did nothing to ameliorate the resentment which occasioned the riot, and much to promote that resentment.

Journalists enter the profession to "make a difference," and they do. Those who take the First Amendment's assurance that the government won't make journalism be objective as some sort of guarantee that in fact journalism IS objective are the suckers who empower the reporters to "make a difference." But the difference journalists make is to weaken respect for constitutionally limited government.

Journalists, tho, will never tell you that. What, you expect to buy The Truth for the price of a newspaper?
