I checked on Ramon Novarro, and though he did change his name, he was born in Mexico. (the cousin of Dolores del Rio) Both of those stars definitely prove that being ``Latin'' did have some cache.

Thanks for the additional info. I knew both names, but forgot all about them. (It's embarrassing how many names FReepers are coming up with, that I'd fogotten.) Bet the "reporters" never heard of either of them.

Let's see. Fernando Lamas was the "Latin Lover." What about Cesar Romero? And everyone knew that the late Tony Quinn came from Mexico -- didn't seem to hurt his career any. And Ricardo Montalban not only got to play Latins, but Japanese (Sayonara), as well!
