Except for that old part, we like it that way, along with our 1911 .45s and 12 gauge pumps!
The DC sniper attacks had nothing to do with "assault weapons", or even semi-auto rifles, for that matter.
Those sniper attacks were one-shot kill attempts.
A standard everyday deer rifle could have been employed with even greater effect: more accuracy and more killing power.
So, the whole semi-auto and "assault weapons" (which are actually full-auto) talk is just a bunch of socialist, anti-individual propaganda, especially in the context of the DC sniper shootings.
The fact that Kucinich and Gephardt would stoop to such craven authoritarian spin, proves exactly how dangerous their ilk really is, should they ever achieve legislative control of this government.
I wouldn't be surprised if gun-banners like them are secretly hoping for civil war to erupt eventually over the Second Amendment issue. These would-be tyrants (all well-meaning socialists, of course) think that they will then have the excuse of necessity (ever the cry of the Tyrant) in order to implement full disarmament of the populace, to "keep the peace," of course.
Such evolutionary Tyrannical processes can occur over a very short time span, if the right spinmeisters and ideologues take power. Beware.
While I agree with your sentiment, I don't think it will be that easy. This will be a major issue in the campaigns for President and Congress, will probably show up as a question in the various debates, and will be used to smear Pubbies running for re-election. The 'Rats will trot out Klinton, victims of Columbines, Michael "Jabba" Moore", Rosie O'Strap-On, etc. The criminal, liberal mainstream media will demagogue the issue, and make anyone calling for the sunset of the AWB out to be right-win, paranoid, delusional militia nutcases.
IF the AWB dies, it will be because the ever-shrinking RKBA community kills it. Period. It won't go quietly, either...it will die a loud, kicking and screaming death, and could be resurrected easily, when and if another high profile shooting at a school or post office happens again. No...I'm not optimistic about this issue, or any other issue related to the RKBA.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Heavens no, I don't think the AWB is in any way rational! All I was trying to say was that the gun grabbers didn't like semi-automatic rifles that look like assault rifles, but couldn't define anything about them that was any different functionally than the "less evil" hunting rifle.
Semi-auto operation? Nope, "legit" hunting rifles are in semi-auto as well. Caliber? Nope, there are sporting rifles in each of the popular calibers. Detachable Magazine? Nope, many sporting rifles have detachable magazines. So the only thing left were flash suppressors, bayonet lugs, etc. to distinguish the "hated" guns from the "barely tolerated - for now" guns.
How many people have been murdered by a flash supressor?
Make that a willful attempt to comply with the law as written. Spirit of the law? What about the spirit of the Second Amendment, Congressman Gaines?
And Carl Schaumberg is right there with him....
I don't think the SALT( Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty/Talks) were about AK-47s and M-16s. Arms includes cannons, grenades and nukes. Considering the misbegotten 1922 Washington "CONFERENCE ON THE LIMITATION OF ARMAMENT", and the resulting treaty, it apparently includes battleships as well.
Cerainly in 1790 it included cannon armed privateers, otherwise the Constitution's delegation of power to Congress to grant letters of marque and reprisal wouldn't make a lot of sense.
And the proposed law has language to the effect that just because a gun is used in a sport, does not make it "particularly suitable for sporting purposes". Real doubletalk, that.
That's why the proposed law reduces the number of bad features from two to one, along with a removable magazine. However it defines "pistol grip" in such a way as to include most any stock. So the law would effectively ban all semi-autos with removable magazines.
My favorite!
Oh, yes they do. Regardless of what the anti-gun folks say-- they'll come for our hunting rifles next!
In the late 1980's, rebels in the mountains of Ethiopia began a war to overthrow their (then Marxist) government using World War I rifles, and tribal spears. The rebellion ultimately succeeded much to the dismay of the Media here in America.
What it boils down to is simply how bad you want it!
