Aide who burned Hitler's body dies at 86

Otto Guensche, an aide to Adolf Hitler who burned the Nazi dictator's body in the final days of World War II to keep it from the advancing Soviets, has died, his family said Monday. He was 86.

An SS officer and a member of Hitler's inner circle who spent the last hours with the Nazi leader in the Fuehrer bunker in Berlin before he and his companion Eva Braun committed suicide on April 30, 1945, Guensche lived quietly in West Germany after the war following several years in Soviet captivity.

He died Oct. 2 of heart failure at his home in the town of Lohmar near the former capital of Bonn, his eldest son Kai Guensche told The Associated Press.

Guensche said in a recent AP interview that Hitler had personally ordered him to burn his body. When the day came, Hitler's chief of staff, Martin Bormann, attempted to set the corpses of Hitler and Braun alight in the garden of the Reich chancellery in Berlin. But it was Guensche who threw a burning rag that started the fire.

He was captured by Red Army troops at the end of the war.

Born Sept. 24, 1917, Guensche joined the Wehrmacht and rose to the rank of SS first lieutenant. He was also with Hitler when the Nazi leader survived an assassination attempt on July 20, 1944.

Guensche was widowed and is survived by three children. His body was cremated, his son said.

The bigger question is why this guy was still alive in the first place.

"Goodwin's Law of Usenet

Professor Goodwin, U of I, in 1981 made the observation that Usenet discussions gravitate downhill.

He postulated that as the length of a discussion thread grows, the probability approaches one (1) that one participant will introduce the terms "Hitler" or "Nazi".

The custom has evolved that the first party to utter "Hitler" or "Nazi" has lost the discussion, and the thread terminates."

Why should he have not been? Do you have any evidence he committed any war crimes? I don't. Sure, he appears to have held reprehensible beliefs, but that's not enough, in my humble opinion...

"His body was cremated."

Must have been worried that his body would fall into the hands of the Russians too.

There's all kinds of nutty theories on the 'net, good for a chuckle or two..

"..Why did the Russian radar pick up the mysterious JU52 transport plane? There are still in existence Russian Army radar reports of a transport plane apparently crashing into the Havel River at 10:30 pm on April 29 and again at the same time the following night. Specialist German seaplane pilot, Hans Abert has sworn by affidavit that he flew such a plane fitted with floats and that, on the second trip he picked up, to use his own words, "the most important man in Germany, and it wasn't Martin Borman, head of the Nazi party secretariat." Why was General Franco's chauffeur sent to Madrid airport? According to Senor Stefan Aceituna, who was one of General Franco's drivers during 1945 and beyond, he was sent to meet a plane arriving at the Madrid airport on the night of April 30, 1945. He described the plane as "of German origin" and remembered that it arrived very late, "probably after midnight." Following Franco's instructions, the passenger, who had no luggage, was transported "directly to the Palace." Why did Franco build a wall? In May of 1945 the East wing of General Franco's residence in Madrid was sealed off from the rest of the palace and surrounded by a fourteen foot high wall. No explanation of this construction work has ever been forthcoming. The staff assigned to this wing were all fluent in the German tongue. Why did Franco order the pills? In May 1945 Franco's medical staff ordered from Spain's largest pharmaceutical company a carton of 144 bottles of "Doctor Koster's Anti-Gas pills." This order was repeated on a monthly basis until October 1947. Theo Morell, Hitler's personal physician had introduced Hitler to the anti-flatulence medication and Hitler had become so addicted to the strychnine base of these pills that he was known to swallow them by the handful. Suddenly, in May of 1945, General Franco has a need of the identical medication and the need continues unabated until October 1947. Why did Franco ring the doctor?.."
