SACRAMENTO (AP) - Though Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger campaigned against "special interests" and "politics as usual," one of his most formidable tests will come as he juggles the demands of powerful California home builders, commercial developers and real estate interests that lavished money on his campaigns.

From a liberal website:
BUT, I must say on a side note that this recall was a blessing in disguise. Why? Well Davis was a bad apple that's for sure. But there was no politically correct way to run a different Democrat in his place.
Now, the next 3 years of deficits and taxation will be blamed on Arnold. With this bitter taste of the California economy in the people's mouths, a new fresh democrat ( one who can genuinely appeal to the minority vote) will be welcomed.
Just like they're blaming the Clinton recession on Bush, they're going to blame the California deficet on Arnold.

As far as I can see, the only test is how he is going to get any industry kick-started.
If Arnold can get Real Estate, or construction going, good for him.
Maybe one of the ways to close the deficit is to sell off some of the surplus land that CA has. If Arnold sold 10% of the state park lands we would be solvent again, without raising taxes. He11, if he just leased land for 99 years we would be solvent.

Contrary to common belief, there is still a lot of construction still going on in California.
Thanks for your comments on the sale or leasing of state owned land.
Those are just a couple of many ideas that need to be looked at as we must not expect the taxpayers to continue to be whipped to death when other mechanisms are available to save our Republic's economic viability, including reining in rampant spending on social programs and for illegals to receive subsidized and FRee services and educations on the taxpayer's dime.

Environmental groups are very vigilant here. And we're all just a-shakin' in our boots.
Typical hit-piece. Typical anti-Arnold pap.
And as usual, it's the typically boring liberal gloom-and-doom. (((rolling eyes)))

I'm just back from a great dinner at Rick Caruso's flagship The Grove shopping center. Had to go all the way up to Parking Level 8 to find a space.
He's done a truly brilliant job on The Grove. If Arnold's team needs a good businessman and developer as an advisor, I don't think you could do better.

Agreed. The Grove is such a huge hit that other shopping venues, including Rodeo Drive, are undergoing or plan to undergo renovations. [Personally, I am just glad they left the Farmer's Market the same as when I went with my grandmother as a child, same unlevel ground and shabby little stalls. I need to see it each time I visit the Grove's upscale wonderland.]

I vaguely remember Arnold actually mentioning selling off some gov owned CA land.

I still prefer the old Century City mall.

When they worked out the Headwaters trade, they did an inventory of surplus State property for possible exchange. List should be readily available.
Only problem we had with it was that it included Deadwood Conservation Camp - minimum security prison. These folks are very useful to our county. They fight fires. They work on our volunteer fire trucks. They build things. They groom municipal sports fields and build and maintain our small stadiums and County Fairgrounds. So the list needs to be weeded.

For some reason, I never bonded with the Farmers' Market, much preferring the Grove. I do remember the LA Weekly had a very hostile article on the Grove when it first opened, saying that nothing could reasonably replace the old parking lot in back of Farmers' Market, but it certainly seems like most are very happy to see it today.
Ambrose: It's the ideal nerd mall, at least for Apple users. They very shrewdly put the excellent Madame Wu's chinese restaurant right across from the Apple Store. So there was a natural progression for me to visit the Apple Store (which I did, on opening day) and then have dinner at Madame Wu's.
I'm sure it was quite deliberately designed that way, and anyone so thoughtful to even nerd customers deserves a round of applause.
What do you prefer about the Century City mall?

The Century City mall is more "real"... it was designed in a day before outdoor malls were churned out as quickly as a new McDonalds. The parking situation there is certainly preferable.
