The morning after Tom McClintock's high-profile campaign for governor fell short, the conservative state senator was facing a new challenge -- how to keep his job in the Legislature.

Fell short? LMAO!!

He "surged" up to 13%.

I hear he's still surging.

McClintock upheld conservative honor and is a hero. Good Republicans should support him.

Oh, my. It's not like our beloved party supported him much for his controller's office campaign, either; and he lost by only 20,000 votes! (Out of 6.5 million). If they had even attempted to help him match the spending power of Steve Westly, he'd have made it.

Tom, I didn't vote for you in the recall, but pick an office, statewide or federal, and if I'm in your jurisdiction you'll get my vote. Period. Screw the Republican party bigwigs if they don't see your value in this state. Go independent if you have to...

The idea of primary challenges to McClintock is so DOA I want to laugh. If a primary challenger emerges, McClintock will wipe his or her ass off. McClintock's prestige was enhanced by his recent endeavor, not traduced. It won't happen in any event, because Arnold will cause it not to happen. Plus, McClintock's district is not fertile moderate GOP territory. Indeed, almost no Republican district in California fits that category, only those very few districts in California that lean Dem that are held by Pubbies.

If TM lost a lot of the folks on this website hailing the Republican victory would not consider him a hero. He happened to have no impact on the outcome; he could have BLOWN IT. His EGO got in the way.

I like him. If he'd been responsible for Gov. Cruz I'd write him off. But now I hope he runs for higher office like US Senate. He has to do something about the "crazy eyes" though. Both my wife and I thought that was a little freaky.

It do agree it would be nice if he looked a little less like the wizard in The Wizard of Oz. But, I think his senate seat is safe.

Naturally there was tension between Tom and the machine GOP folks. But Tom didn't damage anything and probably helped raise anti-recall vote turnout. There is insufficient cause to seek to oust him at the primary.

"McClintock's district is not fertile moderate GOP territory."

===

From the article:

" his 19th Senate District has changed substantially since he was elected in 2000. His district then included a conservative chunk of the San Fernando Valley that has since been replaced by more moderate parts of Ventura and Santa Barbara County."

Caution: Posting Tom McClintock articles may be hazardous to your mental well-being, unless you like being insulted for being supportive of a conservative and all that goes along with it these days at FR.

This PSA has been brought to you by the "TomBots for a Conservative Candidate in California, Someday, Some Way, Soon, Hopefully, Even ,Yet, Still, Maybe, Never Mind, What was I thinking?" Committee :-)

It wasn't for lack of trying.

Why can we have "conservative" democrats refered to in the press, but not "liberal" republicans-its always "moderate"...

I just don't think his foul, if any, is an ejection-level one.

When the entire GOP is getting on their knees begging him not to be a spoiler, and he refuses to listen, and calls them "terrorists", I would consider that pretty serious.

I don't think McClintok needs to be punished for not dropping out.

Well apparently some freepers are threatened by principled conservatives. the first comment in this thread was lashing Tom. Its a sad day when someone who has been advancing our causes for 20 years is getting lambasted by fellow conservatives. nauseating.

But now I hope he runs for higher office...

Maybe the DNC, Unions, Indian Reservations, etc will bank roll Tom to run against Bush in '04. Tom clearly knows how to deal with complicated issues like the disunity of the GOP.
