LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Democrat Kathleen Sebelius remains ahead of Republican Tim Shallenburger in their race for governor, a new poll released Friday showed, but the contest was getting closer.

The telephone survey of 625 likely Kansas voters on Tuesday and Wednesday showed Sebelius with 49 percent to Shallenburger's 42 percent. Seven percent of respondents were undecided and 2 percent supported minor party candidates.

The poll was conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. of Washington, D.C., for The Lawrence Journal World and other media outlets. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Senator Tim Huelskamp E-Flash from Home November 1, 2002 E-mail: thuelska@ink.org

Time for You to Make a Difference . . .
In recent days, you may have heard the media reports from Topeka: Kathleen Sebelius has a huge financial advantage over Tim Shallenburger. In the past three months alone, Sebelius has spent about $2.5 million (yes, MILION) on advertising, mainly television. Meanwhile, Tim has spent only about $750,000 on advertising. Clearly, Sebelius has done a superb job of attracting liberal Democrat money from all over the country, especially New York and Los Angeles.

What does this mean? People know who Sebelius is. They have watched her on television every day for 3 months. They have established some trust in her. And when Shallenburger attempts to point out her record, it is a huge uphill battle to overcome the identification people have developed with her. (Note: I am not much of a television watcher myself, but billions of advertising dollars are spent everyday with this understanding in mind.)

With such a huge MONEY advantage for the liberal Sebelius, there is only one way to close that gap -- with people, people like You. While Sebelius might have the money advantage, let's demonstrate that we have the people advantage. Time is of the essence. Unless You get involved, Kansas may elect the most liberal governor in Kansas history -- perhaps one of the most liberal governors in the entire country. If you live in southwest Kansas, call myself or Angela and we can get you involved in your hometown -- we DESPERATELY need your help. If you live elsewhere, please call the Shallenburger or Kline headquarters.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Closing the Gap
While I was even disheartened by the campaign race a few weeks ago, fearing that Tim could not close the gap in the polls, recent evidence indicates we are rapidly gaining on Sebelius.

Immediately after our primary victory, it was clear that Tim was far behind -- perhaps even more than 20 points down. Ouch. And then, various media polls claimed that even just one week ago Shallenburger had gained no ground.

Internal polls indicate that by the early part of this week, Tim had narrowed the gap to single digits. And then this evening, a poll by the Lawrence Journal-World reported that

"GOP gubernatorial candidate Tim Shallenburger is within range of an upset victory over perceived Democratic front-runner Kathleen Sebelius, according to a new poll done for the Journal-World. All previous polls have shown Shallenburger, a conservative Republican and current state treasurer, far behind Sebelius. But the new data, which will appear in Friday's edition of the newspaper, shows Shallenburger with a razor-thin lead in one congressional district and close enough in another to close the gap. The survey by Mason-Dixon pollsters also shows that Republican attorney general candidate Phill Kline's lead over Democratic candidate Chris Biggs is thinning, with enough undecided votes remaining to perhaps turn the race his way come Tuesday."

So take heart, dear friends. And take hold. And make a difference. This could be an extremely close race, for both Tim Shallenburger and Phill Kline. You can make a difference.

Sebelius: Lying to her 'Fellow' Catholics
Throughout her campaign, Kathleen Sebelius has tried to highlight her Catholic background. She has featured this claim from the beginning, in hopes of convincing the many Catholic Democrats and Republicans that she is one of them. However, she is clearly not a practicing Catholic. For no one can be both a Catholic and a supporter of abortion, which she is. And she clearly knows that as indicated in this recent letter she mailed out to Catholics trying to mislead them into voting for her. As a Catholic myself, I am deeply offended by her false claims and deliberate misrepresentation of the Catholic faith and her public record. I can't begin to count the number of falsehoods in her letter -- you can read them for yourself.

I am writing to you so that you hear very clearly from me and not through campaign material.

My campaign has received about a dozen calls from people who know me well who are extremely upset about recorded calls they received about my beliefs about abortion. They know me and they know these calls are completely false. Some have also received campaign literature that says my campaign has been funded with hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Political Action Committee started and active in Kansas around the issue of abortion. That is also absolutely false. Because I respect you and trust you, I want you to hear directly from me.

I am not pro-abortion. I will not, and never have, promoted abortion. I am a practicing Catholic. I went to Catholic schools -- from kindergarten through college. My father taught at Notre Dame, my son goes to Georgetown University. I feel about abortion just like you do, and I have worked all my adult life to make sure that there are viable alternatives to abortion. When I was pregnant with my sons, I refused to have amniocentesis that the doctor recommended because I knew that no matter what it showed, I would never choose to have an abortion. The only real difference between my opponent and me on this issue is that I will not make that decision for all the women in Kansas.

I am very concerned that Tim Shallenburger is using that one difference between you and me to separate us on everything else. I beg you not to let that happen. Please work with me to make sure abortion is rare and that young women have education and health care and child care and other services to help them make good decisions. Those are all values of our faith and our Church that Shallenburger does not share. He has a very different political agenda. While we were both in the legislature, Tim voted repeatedly against programs like health care for low income pregnant women and prenatal education--the very things needed to discourage abortion.

I am asking you to work with me to help make Kansas a place where our children and grandchildren have a healthy and prosperous future.

Warmly,
Kathleen Sebelius

The response from Kansans for Life, the largest Pro-Life group in Kansas:

Dear Fellow Catholics:

If anything Kansans for Life PAC has been too nice to Sebelius on the abortion issue. Note she doesn't deny any of her votes or quotes, endorsement by abortions groups, or comments made by retired Kansas Catholic Archbishop Strecker about her leading the death march to the abortion clinics like the death march to the gas chambers in the WWII Holocaust that are all in our Citizen Fact Sheet. She also doesn't deny Dr. Tiller's $35,000 donations to her Bluestem PAC and her campaign.

She does deny being pro-abortion, however, citing the fact that she has never PROMOTED abortion. Evidently in her view, because she doesn't literally stand on the street corner "promoting" abortion, she isn't "pro-abortion".

She has stated RECENTLY she likes the abortion law in Kansas the way it is. The way it is is an average of one viable baby a day killed on a woman from out of state for reasons that have nothing to do with preventing the death of the mother. The way it is is 12,000 abortions a year, 50% on out of state women, 39% on women who have had one or more before. The way it is is 240 partial births in Kansas in 1998 and 1999, ALL on viable babies, ALL for the "mental" health of the woman as determined by the abortionist and a doctor of his choosing who need not be of any particular specialty. (Can be a dermatologist and can be the same doctor over and over again.) The way it is is animal clinics more regulated than abortion clinics. Sebelius voted against the Woman's Right to Know Act and for a bill requiring Kansas taxpayers to pay for abortions.

She crafted and sponsored the bill that pased the Kansas legislature in 1992 that allows abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy.

Kathleen Sebelius' claim that there was campaign literature that said hundreds of thousands of dollars went from the abortion PAC to her campaign is false, at least as far as Kansans for Life and KFL PAC is concerned. No one I know of has claimed that. Our phone calls didn't say that. Our Citizen Fact Sheet said only that $35,000 went from Dr. Tiller to her Bluestem PAC and to her campaign directly (not "hundreds of thousands"). It then said only that $200,000 was spent by Dr. Tiller's PAC to defeat Tim Shallenburger. Such can't help but help Sebelius, but we did not say it went to her campaign.

She is simply trying to trump up falsehoods to try and discredit the truth about her abortion supporters and her support of abortion.

I don't know what in the world she is talking about when she says she has worked to make abortion rare, nor about Tim Shallenburger voting against helping low income pregnant women and against prenatal education. She offers no evidence of either. We offer lots of evidence in our claims about her. They are fully documented and available on request!

If anyone else gets this letter, please let us know at kansansforlife@aol.com. Mary Kay Culp, Executive Director, Kansans for Life, Inc.

The Southwest Daily Times Endorses Shallenburger !! Earl Watt, Publisher, Southwest Daily Times (Liberal, Kansas, October 24, 2002) "Southwest Kansas is made up of hard-working folks who want to provide a better life for their families. When Southwest Kansans face difficulties, the solutions are usually tough but simple.

When faced with tough economic times, Southwest Kansans have always tightened their belts and made the personal sacrifices to ensure the future of their families and their businesses.

Those same values are seen in Tim Shallenburger.

He wants to solve the state’s economic woes the same way Kansas families do. Shallenburger understands that the Kansas economy cannot grow by taking money out of the hands of Kansans. He realizes that as those dollars are spent buying food, clothing and other Kansas goods and services, the economy will improve. And while it is improving, the state budget will improve, because the result of increased spending is increased tax revenues in the state’s general fund.

Shallenburger sees the benefit of economic growth in the state, but he also recognizes that existing Kansas businesses need support, too.

Liberal is no stranger to seeking out the economic home run. We know all too well the consequences of this kind of economic gamble. And we know when we neglect our existing businesses for the sake of new development, the existing businesses suffer or close.

Shallenburger is the only candidate to make a commitment to existing business retention and expansion.

He makes no apologies for offering tough solutions, like reducing the state’s expenditures by up to 7.5 percent, with the exception of education.

He has a plan to carry this out, in one instance, saving more than $700,000 by consolidating Kansas Department of Transportation outside consultants with other state agencies. By doing so, Shallenburger wants to get more Kansas tax dollars where Kansans need them — in classrooms, on highways and enhancing business, not lost in middle management.

And when it comes to protecting our children at school and making Kansas a safe place, Shallenburger’s record as being tough on crime is unmatched.

Shallenburger has not said all the things Kansans want to hear. His approach has been realistic. He has not offered to do more knowing there will be less.

What he has offered is to make the necessary trims at the state level without increasing taxes. By doing so, Kansas can remain competitive with surrounding states for economic opportunities and a favorable business climate.

That solution is the best road to an economic recovery. And an economic recovery will more than fund all the needs in education, transportation, and other state institutions.

That is why Kansas needs Tim Shallenburger as the next governor."

I don't know. Pretty typical of weasely Democraps to hide behind the costumes of a children's holiday to perform political mishchief. Kinda like Bubba likes to hide behind women's skirts when he gets caught! (I just don't understand why the broads keep letting him back there. Sheesh.) fsf

PING
I will start a thread soon, everything that is of interest to the campaign will be posted there. We need a volonteer to post this to everyone on the Kansas site. We need a volunteer to post this to everyone on the Kansas site. I tried to mass e-mail a message but can't figure how to do it. I worked on it for an hour this morning but to no avail. I don't have the time to sit and do it on an individual basis so step up to the plate. I have a feeling we can hit a home run here, freepers just need to get involved with this. I also have a feeling that most on the Kansas list don't check in very often. If your interested, let me know. Private e-mail me and I will send you every article that has been printed in the last couple weeks. It would be easier to have your home e-mail and i won't abuse it in anyway. Lets get busy this week-end.
Yours in Liberty
