Oh, yes. But that coercion almost always comes from central administration, and not from the union.

Let me give you an example. In the school district where I taught, central administration decided that American History would henceforth be an optional course. If a student didn’t want to take American History, it could be replaced by World History or African History.

The history teachers were livid about that! No matter. It was a done deal.

As a physics teacher, I was also subject to insane directives from above. But the history and English teachers had it much worse.

The union was never involved in any of that. Trust me, I know.
