Next Tuesday, Alabama Republicans voters will go to the polls for a Senate Republican primary runoff election. Alabama is thought of as a conservative state yet is currently being represented by Democrat Doug Jones. How did that happen? Could the same result happen again?
Approximately three years ago, Republicans nominated Judge Roy Moore to run in a special election to fill the seat vacated by Senator Jeff Sessions when he became the US Attorney General. Judge Moore was a well-known yet controversial figure in Alabama government. And Alabama Republicans decided to make him their candidate for Senate even though other capable candidates were available, including a sitting senator, Luther Strange, who had been appointed by the governor.
I won't belabor all the details of that race here. Alabamans know the history all too well. But ultimately Judge Moore lost an election he should have won.
Yes, Judge Moore would have made a good Senator. But he didn't win. Winning isn't everything but it is necessarily the first step to represent the people of Alabama who are currently being represented by Democrat Doug Jones. Don't get me wrong.
I supported Judge Moore myself because I thought Alabama Republicans knew their state and should have made the right choice. But Alabama Republicans made a mistake. The Moore race became about Judge Moore. Judge Moore was wronged, you say. Even if that is true, and I were to agree with you, he lost an election because the election became about him and his past controversies. And too many Alabamans couldn't support that.
Which brings us to the current runoff. Former Senator Jeff Sessions and former football coach Tommy Tuberville are the two candidates who will face off in the primary election.

I hope Republicans are awake this election...
Moore should have won. Apathetic morons stayed home.
Yep. Both are the same mistake again
Sessions is a useless dottering old fool, a perfect harmless senator.
At least he will be our useless old fool, and it too old to be starting small useless wars.
Too bad the gop can’t find a normal candidate in that sweat box of a state.
Me and my family will vote for Tommy on Tuesday.
Tommy Tuesday, we’re callin’ it!
Bush League Republicans would rather a Democrat win than a conservative.
They have proven this over and over again.
I think Tuberville wins the primary as well as the general but should Sessions win the primary, he will win the general. This is not 2018 and neither of the Republican candidates has the electoral disability that Moore had. Jones is a goner.
The Mobile Munchkin misses all the DC cocktail parties. 20 years wasn’t enough.
Yep. They helped Murkowski win as a write in against their own candidate years ago and they have only gotten worse.
Me and my family will vote for Tommy on Tuesday.
Tommy Tuesday, were callin it!
I have to ask you a question.......is Tuberville anti-Trump or not? I’ve heard both.....anti and pro.......thanks in advance......;)
Sessions tenure as AG has revealed his true nature, do not let that snake slither back in the door.
Yes, we’ll pick up the Jones seat, but we are likely going to lose the Gardner seat (CO), the McSally seat (AZ), and may very well lose the Collins seat (ME), as well. We could very well lose the Senate.
The historian Victor Davis Hanson (who I think is brilliant) said it succinctly: 2020 is a choice between civilization and anarchy. At this point, it’s a coin toss.
Winning is absolutely everything, and nothing else matters.
This is not 2018 and neither of the Republican candidates h”as the electoral disability that Moore had.”
If Sessions wins thd primary dems will run ads about him stabbing Trump in the back. If Tuberville wins they have a couple of issues already to throw at him, plus tbe staffers and cheerleaders who will come out of the trashheap and accuse him of...whatever they think will work. That is their moodus operandi, and it worked perfectly against Moore.
I have to ask you a question.......is Tuberville anti-Trump or not? Ive heard both.....anti and pro.......thanks in advance......;
I can’t answer your question, but I can tell you the ads they are running are infuriating, as are the ads for our local congressional race. They are all beating the crap out of each other. It’s not productive.
I do not live in Alabama but...I have spent much time throughput the state. I was once a terrific fan of Jeff Sessions, but no more. Jeff Sessions is disloyal, a traitor to POTUS, Donald J. Trump, a weak sister with no backbone or profile in courage!!! Jeff Sessions in a rabid turncoat a true Judas and IMHO, he is in tune with the failed, useless Mitt Romney!!!
Any Alabama voter that casts a vote for Jeff Session in this coming Tuesday’s primary runoff election is either smoking too much reefer or is neither of sound mind or body.
Folks in Alabama cast your votes for Coach Tommy Tuberville and defeat both Jeff Sessions and Democrat, low life
low life, useless, Doug Jones!!! Case Closed!!!
I’ll take no pleasure in voting for the first time for the first Senator to endorse President Trump, nor in his sure wins in the primary and the general. But I’ll a little comfort in knowing he’ll be more likely sooner to either retire or expire than the Tuber.
Its not productive.
I agree
I believe whoever wins will beat Doug Jones in November.
Trump will make sure there is a huge turnout on election night. Jones is toast no matter who gets nominated.
