Maybe too late to enter the race, but not to late to become the nominee. Nomination hapens at the nominating convention.
And even THAT isn't the final word. Imagine a nominee dying or being incapacitated before the election. The party is still on the ballot. In presidential election, you vote for a PARTY, and the party can do whatever it wants, whenever it wants.
