I don’t think it’s possible to have a gold backed currency. There isn’t enough gold or silver in the world to support an economy the size of America, much less anybody else.
We had it until “Keynesian conservative” Nixon threw it away. Nobody died en masse without our utterly unsustainable fiat-currency-backed welfare state. And yes, we had “an economy the size of America” back then.
