If he comes across an an authentic republican, he would have lost reelection . . .

The sad fact is that Hogan only cares about himself and not even other GOP candidates on the ballot. He has demonstrated that he has no coattails. This has been the topic of conversation on the local conservative talk radio station to which I listen.

Moreover, I have called Hogan’s office to lodge complaints, only to have them fall on naive and deaf ears of staffers/aides who seem outraged by my taking issues with Hogan’s positions.

He is a jacka$$ that should be a democrat. He’s not done anything for me and my state.

Hillary carried Virginia by a margin of about 212,000 votes. Her margins in Arlington County, Alexandria, and Fairfax County combined were about 314,000 votes. So in the rest of Virginia Trump's margin was about 100,000 votes.

I had ancestors who lived in Frederick, Nelson, Floyd, and Patrick Counties. All of them went for Trump, some by a 2-1 margin or better.

Reagan’s approval in 1983 was 35%

That’s why Mondale went on to defeat him handily in 1984. /s

Real Clear Politics’ view:

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2019/01/17/trumps_re-election_chances_may_be_better_than_you_think_139193.html

Trump is right where Clinton and Obama were during this stage of their presidencies. And these are polls from a month ago during the shutdown.

Hogan just won his second election and is term-limited. Some Maryland morons led by press creatures are toying with him about running against Trump in 2020. About as feasible as the flea with an erection lying on his back on a barge shouting to raise the drawbridge.

I see him winning about what he got the last time. He might pick up New Hampshire and Minnesota and he might lose one of the other Midwest states he won the last time. Essentially a wash as it were, but I don’t see any R or D winning 400 electoral votes anytime soon.

Just like the mid terms were going to shock the world. Sorry, I don’t buy it.

You just proved my point. He is not an authentic republican, so he won reelection.

...doesn't care about other GOP candidates = not an authentic republican.

Hogan doesn't particularly upset me because I understand who he is and why he does what he does. He knows he is a republican in a deep deep blue state. He does what he needs to do to survive, so I don't blame him for that. If he went all in with a big fat "R" by his name and pushed all the "R" issues, he would lose bigly.

Except in certain circumstances, R's are literally hated in Maryland. I realize there is the Eastern Shore and the western part of the state, but those parts of the state are absolutely irrelevant to the state as a whole - they are meaningless. The only counties that matter are Montgomery, PG, Baltimore and Baltimore City and that's it. That is where everyone lives.

I don't mean to be harsh, but I think you are the one who is naïve in not understanding Hogan can't be viewed as a typical republican and survive politically. So he has to downplay his party affiliation and issues, appear independent and adopt some democrat positions so he is inoffensive to the voters. I give him a lot of credit in understanding that...he is a smart politician. I agree he is not satisfying, but he is the best you will get in Maryland, so you should be happy with that.

What did Hogan say in this article that is so terrible?

He’s right that by polls, Trump’s approval is not real high, and amongst Repubs, he’s likely to win primary so it’s almost useless to primary against him.

Hogan certainly isn’t perfect, but he’s better than having a blatant Rat, and gee, somehow he managed to get elected a SECOND time in MD, not done since the ‘50s. Trump isn’t perfect either, solid conservative or not.

“God forbid someone to have their own opinion without someone else over reacting”

Along with your points on Hogan in a strong Dem state - Pretty much exactly.

And God forbid anyone even BELIEVE that Trump could lose. Even that is offensive, apparently, never mind opposing Trump’s view or action. But that was all this was about - could Trump lose? Say “yes”, and you’re a traitor!

Hogan is better than the Dem alternative but has not needed to be so vocally anti-Trump the entire time. Hogan was a businessman who had no elected office before becoming governor. Governors are sometimes elected in heavily Dem states because even some Dems realize that they need to right a sinking financial ship once in a while. As for running in primaries for President, he has almost zero charisma, IMHO.

Of course you are probably correct, most States are pretty hardened in their politics. But I can see us picking up VA due to the mess going on there and NH, which was really stolen from us. I don’t see him losing any States he won. So, it is possible he will get in the 350 range, a nice comfortable win.

Just like the mid terms were going to shock the world.

I'm no fanboy; I see things as they are.

I always thought the midterms were shaky. I also thought Trump would win the election.

What makes Trump successful is the fact he is not a politician, he is a marketer, and he began this latest marketing campaign with the SOTU.

Well, I hope you are correct. But did you forget about last year's SOTU address. It was masterful, too. Now no one remembers it and that will be true of this year's speech.

You make a great point that he is a marketer and he is that.

Last year’s SOTU was good, but this year’s was the most awe inspiring SOTU I have ever seen, not only the message, but also the effect. No president in my lifetime EVER controlled the room the way Trump did.

Anyone who witnessed it knew who was the alpha.

Then immediately following, Trump memorized the people in El Paso. What did that rally and the SOTU have in common? Both were skillfully scripted sales pitches flawlessly presented by the president. And what is the significance of those two events?

(Cue the choirs of angels.)

President Trump has mastered Message Control. Those poor Democrats didn’t know what hit them.
