I've been haunted by a claim my KCRW colleague Rich Lowry made on our radio show a few weeks ago: Democrats keep coming up short in elections because they won't give any ground on "cultural issues" to win back the working-class voters they've alienated over the past decades.
On one hand, it's obviously true that Democrats suffer from a cultural disconnect from non-college-educated voters who have abandoned the party in droves. Democrats believe their economic agenda should appeal to people with lower incomes, yet income has become a poor predictor of partisan alignment; Democrats' substantial inroads with upscale suburban voters have been more than offset by the loss of voters down the income spectrum, most of whom did not finish college.
Most of the discussion of this trend has focused on non-college-educated white voters, who have swung heavily toward Republicans; but Democrats should also be worried about their disconnect with non-college-educated nonwhite voters, whose turnout declined precipitously in 2016.
On the other hand, when you look at the polling on specific "cultural issues," Democrats usually have the edge.
This combination of facts has me thinking a lot about what I call "the hamburger problem." As I see it, Democrats' problem isn't that they're on the wrong side of policy issues. It's that they're too ready to bother too many ordinary people about too many of their personal choices, all the way down to the hamburgers they eat.....

I read somewhere about a guy who thought blacks were 40% of our population and LGBT was 25%. I did a little experiment and asked a few people and surprisingly, they guessed near those same %s.
Maybe the Dims believe it too?
Liberals never fail to equate conservative with “less educated”.
“Both partys politics suck and the people are growing sick n tired of them.”
I don’t think that is an accident. The parties have agreed to split the electorate down the middle based on policy choices
. That way they can push their unpopular agenda down our throats (we have no where to go).
Then Trump came along and mixed the issues up. A Conservative who is for working people was not something they had planned for.
Whenever anybody here brings up a “race war” I have to chuckle. Blacks are only 12% of the population and many of their “military age” young men are in prison or in jail.
And their hideous candidates - Hillary! (corruption), Bernie (Communism), and Elizabeth Warren (fraud).
No, they can’t.
Liberal have only won so much because they’ve lied and re-defined the language.
If they had openly run as socialists over the last 40 years they would have been beaten into submission.
I am almost 60 now, and I’ve watched the slow progression.
But their mask is off now.
Leftists can go to hell.
I think the final straw for a lot of people was this trans-gender idiocy.
Men going into girls’ bathrooms? Not anywhere near MY children, if they know what’s good for them.
They just need to get more people into those indoctrination centers we like to call “Colleges” and “Universities”. Free college for all at taxpayer expense should do the trick. Problem solved.
That is absolutely correct. Americans can be forgiving and have short memories. The secret to Democrats winning elections is to wait until people forget the disasters that resulted from their previous elections.
IMHO the short memory problem is actually a naive youth problem. Every 20 years you have an electorate renewed with a bunch of young voters who were babes in arms when the last Demodisaster struck. Naturally they dont remember, and it just ain't that simple trying to educate them.
The blinkered ignorant snobbery of patting themselves on the back for being the party of the “educated” falls flat on it’s face when you look outside the very self-absorbed and very white leadership of the Demcrat Party. Urban blacks are college educated? Hispanics are college educated? Why is the self-appointed party of inclusivity so strangely obsessed with just white people when it comes to college education or the lack thereof? They’re perturbed because some escaped their cultural indoctrination net, pure and simple.
They do forget how bad it was. Take NYC for example. Parts of that city were unlivable. Democrats proclaimed it was ungovernable. Even Times Square was dangerous. Now that all changed when Rudy became mayor. Years later, the terrifying lib running that city now is trying to change it back.
