My take is... Trump standing up and defending against her despicable proclamations is what did it... not her statement.
Had she said this with ANY other candidate it would have played to her advantage as they would have ignored or otherwise let her get away with it.

I believe it had a bigger impact than she even realizes. Trump mocked it and used it to his advantage. That swung several swing voters (some of whom I know) and the rest is history.

Bubba Clinton has never said rednecks were irredeemable. Senator Byrd used a vulgar word once and redemption was still available for that group as a class.
The way she described deplorables in English usage as a word standing alone will not pass spell check at FR. She invented a word.
