Who cares? Maybe she hadn’t eaten. Maybe she was tired. Maybe she just likes her beer. Doesn’t the law have anything else to worry about?

After having one or two too many and walking home from the bar late one night (only about a 1/4 mile), a local police car pulled up alongside me and rolled the window down.

Officer: Doing okay tonight?

Me: Yessir!

Officer: Where have you been tonight?

Me: At the bar.

Officer: Where’s your car?

Me: In my driveway at home where I’m headed. Bottom of the street, just around the corner.

Officer: Do you want a lift?

Me: Umm... front seat or back seat?

Officer (rolling his eyes and laughing): Front seat, hop in!

I like my little town... :-)

Agree.

I wouldn’t be proud of doing this, but if that’s the worst thing she’s ever done, it’s more of a poor judgment call than anything else. How about we focus on serious crime instead of looking for people with a tail light out so we can ticket them or harass them?

The police at the Iowa State Fair were rather merciless on public intox this year as a result of past incidents of scuffles and fights, including ‘Beat Whitey’ nights by the local diversity denizens.

This makes me sad with a bittersweet sadness.

Immediately you think of State Fair, the musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and the movie from the musical.

I remember the scene where some of the characters show up at the makeshift bar at the Iowa State Fair, and it showed how casually booze was enjoyed and accepted among almost everyone in the US then.

Amazing that they would not act deferentially toward this poor woman who put up with being the Governor's wife and all the bullshit she had to do to keep the Iowegians happy.

Probably had a few pops and then went walking around in the heat.

Sad to see so many prissy LEOs who couldn't show an ounce of judgment at such an unusual venue, with someone there like her. I don't care if she is a Rat or not... this is just petty priggishness.

She obviously did not harm anyone, and to tell you the truth I would have to be pretty hammered to put up with all the smells, the huge basketball-sized pig balls staring you in the face, and all the dumbasses she had to be nice to.

Surprised she didn't go into the pickle judging tent and fire up a big blunt.

I sure would want to.

Who forced her to go to the state fair in the first place? Her husband is no longer governor. And boy, do you have a good opinion of Iowa or what? I’m guessing you’re a vegan, right?

I lived in Iowa half my life but I never heard it was illegal to be merely drunk in public.

Wait, you have never heard the expression "public intoxication" (also known as "drunk and disorderly") in the context of an arrest?

You don't get out much, do you?

From Wikipedia:

Iowa: The Code of Iowa Sec 123.46 states that "a person shall not be intoxicated or simulate intoxication in a public place". Public Intoxication is a Simple Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of 30 days jail and a $1000 fine. Aggravated Public Intoxication (3rd or subsequent Offense) is an Aggravated Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of 2 years in prison. As of 2013, Johnson County, home of the University of Iowa had the highest arrest rate for public intoxication of any county in the state, at 8.28 per 1000 residents.

I don’t normally get drunk, much less drunk in public. When stationed overseas I would occasionally, because there was no driving involved. Korea, for instance, is a nation of very heavy drinkers, so you wouldn’t really stick out.

She was probably at the outdoor concert watching some now middle aged 80s band perform and got her drink on.

Seems that way. And why not quietly escort the former first lady home. Perhaps political payback is a factor.

I’m curious if she was drinking alone. If not, what happened to her companion(s)?

Just guessing (I spend a ridiculous amount of time at the State Fair) that she was on her way to the restroom. There is a popular drinking spot where the nearest restroom is about 100 ft away via the "Midway" (it's not really...but is kind of next to it). Always LEO there because it's also near the Grandstand.

I may or may not have made that same trip a number of times...a long time...or two weeks ago:)
