Actually I hear one of the reasons is because Huntsman may be the only one to get Senate Confirmation. If Trump picks someone who has a wiff of Russia then they will be voted down.....McCain and others will see to it. Huntsman might be the only option.
And if he did pick him because he was told that nobody else would be accepted, then why not pick Obama, Hillary, Van Jones, or even James Comey? After all, we really need to send someone, anyone to Russian! ;^)
