Jason Chaffetz: Members of Congress should get $30,000 a year to help them pay rent
CNBC ^ | June 27, 2017 | Ester Bloom

The cost of housing has gotten so expensive that Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) thinks that a monthly subsidy of $2,500 would help ease the burden — for members of Congress.

He told The Hill on Monday that "I really do believe Congress would be much better served if there was a housing allowance for members of Congress," given that "Washington, D.C., is one of the most expensive places in the world." He said that "a $2,500 housing allowance would be appropriate and a real help to have at least a decent quality of life in Washington."

$2,500 a month comes out to $30,000 a year. That would bring the annual Congressional salary, which is $174,000, to over $200,000. It would also cost taxpayers "roughly $16 million a year for all 535 members" of Congress, The Hill reports.....

I vote they move back to their district and live as normal, mortal, taxpaying citizens, with a round trip to DC only once. In today’s internet world they, with the proper equipment, could do the same bang up job they do today IN DC.

What about those little 200 square foot houses that have all the amenities that the leftists/communists/greenies/and government employee/leeches want every one else to live in.

F that; they make plenty.

We elected these a-holes to serve our interests, not their purses.

If I can survive on FAR less, they should be content with what they get (too much IMHO)

I haven’t even perused the comments yet, but as soon as I saw the headline, I realized the time is long past due that members of Congress were sequestered in a cinderblock government run housing complex with dorm-like communal facilities. It would toughen them up, and break this entitlement mentality for something that was never supposed to be a lifelong career.

Many current and former (Clinton, Obama) members of The Gang of 535, aka CONgre$$ should be in federal prison.

Hey Jason- Seniors, disabled people and veterans got hardly ANY cost of living increases for nearly 8 years under obama- many have to live on as little as $14,000 per year- they were denied a lousy $20-$40 a month increase to cover the insanely high prices of foods and meds

Cry us a friggin river about how ‘expensive life is’!

You all got your cost of living increases when our nations most vulnerable and needy citizens were DENIED theirs!

And let me tell you sir- most of those folks worked a hell of a lot harder than you folks in congress ever even thought of working! What do you all work? 4 months out of the year?

Who the hell are you to demand that taxpayers pay you ANOTHER $30,000 per year when so many seniors, disabled and veterans have to choose between staying warm in the winter and food?

How about we pay Congress members 1million dollars and they stay home! Think of all the money we would save.
