Times change. What it meant to be an “ultra-liberal” in 1960s Virginia may be something different from what it means today. Holton did slide pretty smoothly into the Democratic Party in his later years, though.
In 1965, Godwin was the Conservative Democrat nominee against the left-wing RINO Holton, and he beat him.
Holton was the nominee again in 1969, running against the son of a former Governor, and beat the Dem narrowly. In a political stunt, attempting to appeal to Blacks, he decided to use his children as pawns (including Tim Kaine’s future wife) and stick them in virtually all-Black Richmond public schools at a time when it could’ve endangered their safety (nevermind putting them in a subpar education environment). If my father had used me as a pawn as such, I’d have never forgiven him.
Holton was horrified when Godwin left the Democrats and declared to run to succeed Holton (worse yet with the VA Democrats collapsing under the weight of the leftist national party, Holton didn’t want any of the Conservatives becoming Republicans, preferring “his” party to stay a small, elitist leftist clique).
Holton’s next trick was to try to get the open Senate seat in 1978. With 3 major candidates representing the different wings: Dick Obenshain as the Conservative standard-bearer; ex-Navy Secretary John Warner as the “moderate” Nixonite with his new wife, Elizabeth Taylor; and Holton from the far-left. As we sadly remember, Obenshain won, only to die in a plane crash during the midst of the general election (had he won, many believe he’d have been a future Presidential contender). The party had to scramble to name a replacement, and John Warner lucked out by “appealing” to Conservatives along the lines of, “Hey, it’s me or Holton, which do you prefer ?”
He’s still alive, turns 94 this year, although he passed the baton to his leftist progeny, his daughter, son-in-law, son (who ran as a Dem for Oregon Atty Gen), and of course, the real gem of the family, Linwood Kaine. Linwood being the end result of grandpa’s trendy leftist ideology, now a Marxist agitator and domestic terrorist. (BTW, last I checked, Holton has not renounced his GOP affiliation, despite the fact he probably hasn’t endorsed one in since probably the ‘80s or even ‘70s).
Post #42. As I said, I believe, like the equally execrable Bill Milliken of Michigan, his fellow leftist RINO Governor of the era, he has not left the GOP despite having endorsed Democrats for years.
“.....Conservative Democrat ....”
Wow... now THERE’S two words that do NOT go together. Sort of like “American” and “liberal”.
Or JUMBO shrimp : )
