They want the precedent set that electors can freely defy their state legislatures. This will allow Trump electors to be bribed and/or intimidated or blackmailed to vote against Trump. It will make a total mockery out of the popular election process this nation has evolved to, and that is what Soros wants.
Their idea is that if they dont vote for HRC, then they can entice Republican electors to not vote for Trump, but for some globalist elitist “compromise” candidate instead.
