Trump is having enough problems with talking about issues that matter to large swaths of the electorate. If he were to take on an issue most people do not care about, he would sink fast. His platform can be summarized as "the American Government should serve Americans, not China."
If Cruz were to take on this issue, his candidacy would sink even faster.
While I am in favor of repealing the 17th amendment, the issue needs a degree of respectability before a politician can take it on. At present it would be laughed at.

Good reasoning.
I agree it would sink Cruz. Trump may be a different story. I think for Trump it could revitalize his campaign and help shore up some delegate problems. It would all be in the presentation. All he has to do is introduce it and then it’s just a 3 min portion of his standard stump.
Be less risky if he actually researched it first and see if it appeals to him.
