Actually, he was raised in Queens, which though one one of the 5 boroughs that comprise NYC, is quite a different place from Manhattan. As a matter of fact, each borough consists of many different neighborhoods, each of which are also very different from the others in the same borough. And THIS, among many other things is what you don't know about nor understand at all.
Some other large metropolitan cities are the same way, though not to the extent as NYC is. That is just a statement of fact, with no impugnation or compliment to any particular place.
And just as with most other places, time and tide wait for no man and major cities all over the world go through constant change.
Many people move to NYC yet don't truly become NEW YORKERS in any REAL sense.
It also depends on socio-economic class and generational changes, as to what exactly NYC "culture" is.
