I agree with your sentiment, but the reality is that it is much easier than people imagine to take over the GOP starting at the most local level.
Ron Paul supporters did it in Iowa and Colorado, and shocked themselves. They couldn’t keep control because of Paul’s very limited appeal.
Republicans out in the states have been becoming more conservative. The Iowa GOP, for example, is completely different than when Robert Ray, Jim Leach and Mary Louise Smith (the RNC’s original Abortion Granny) held sway.

I tend to agree with you. Regardless of political party, Lincoln’s decisions regarding the CW and his Generals devastated the country at that time and hard feelings remain for the way the South’s thriving economy was destroyed by the North and followed closely by the carpetbaggers who took over the lands of the South, because the Union Generals burned every court house that held the land deeds.
