Hide it? He didn't think he had to report writing a check from his brokerage account. Do you report to the world that you used your credit card? From the NYT article:

A spokeswoman for Mr. Cruz’s presidential campaign, Catherine Frazier, acknowledged that the loan from Goldman Sachs, drawn against the value of the Cruzes’ brokerage account, was a source of money for the Senate race.

I've taken out plenty of margin loans from my brokerage account, which charges far lower rates than Goldman Sachs. All I need to do is write a check to myself. No credit decision or lending officer involved. I just need enough equity in the account.

If you can forget you're a Canadian Citizen, you can easily forget where that $1m came from. It's not like he is the smartest constitutional lawyer in the country who should know campaign finance laws or anything.
