New petition wants Jon Stewart to moderate a presidential debate

Some people want to vote for Hillary; others want to vote Jeb. Still, there are others who prefer Carly, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson or The Donald. But when it comes to the 2016 Presidential Election, this much we can all agree on: We want more Jon Stewart.

Now, there’s a new petition making the rounds that might just make that American dream come true. And if this Change.org movement has its way, the recently-retired “Daily Show” host will moderate an upcoming Presidential debate.

“Jon Stewart is more than qualified to tackle the moderating job,” says the petition. “Mr. Stewart has interviewed 15 heads of state, 22 members of the United States Cabinet, 32 members of the United States Senate, 7 members of the United States House of Representatives, and scores of other political leaders from this country and around the world while establishing himself as the most trusted person in (satirical) news.”

As “Daily Show” fans know by now, Stewart left the show earlier this month, and will be replaced by Trevor Noah in September. Although Stewart has been secretive about where he’ll take his career next — and he undoubtedly has plenty of options — moderating a debate would actually be a good way to maintain his relevance on the national stage without committing to his next move.

Beyond all that, the thought of Stewart and Donald Trump addressing each other in such a venue is enough to make the mouths water of political and pop-culture junkies alike.

“[An] important attribute of a moderator is trust,” the petition continues, explaining why Stewart should get the gig. “Many in the US believe Jon Stewart shares their worldview and values. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll reported that 52.1 percent of respondents agree that Mr. Stewart ‘generally shares [their] view of the world’ on ‘some or most issues.’ Choosing Jon Stewart would be a popular choice among voters.”

Although the petition is non-binding, it might be enough to get some buzz going: “We ask that the Commission on Presidential Debates consider and provide the opportunity to Mr. Stewart to host one of the three major presidential debates directly preceding the 2016 election. We also wish for a public response to this petition.”

At the time of this article’s publishing, the petition has gathered just under 100,000 supporters. So, whether Stewart ever wants to be daily again or not, it is clear that many people out there would like to see him star in one more “Show.”

Any republican who shows up at a debate with Stewart as moderator should automatically be disqualified. Along with any network that would hire him.

Ha! Stewart is the kind of guy who likes to mock and take pot-shots when there is no chance that anyone can do or say anything back to him. There is no way he could stand up to any one of the GOP candidates; even the wimpy ones.
