College deferments were not illegal during the Vietnam War. Many people had them. So what? And I don’t know that you lobbied for them—they were issued depending on your student status. Dick Cheney had student deferments—was he unpatriotic also?
I had the same status as Trump initially did, in 1972 and 1973—1-A, and I was a college student, and I did not lobby anybody. He had other classifications later on—1-Y after the medical exam, then 2-S and then 4-F in 1971, when the 1-Y classification was discontinued.
My draft numbers in two lotteries were high, so I did not get called. Then the draft ended with the wind-down to the Vietnam War in 1973.
I never said Trump insisted on going into the Army—you made that assumption.
But a bone spur would disqualify you because you couldn’t march with one. My uncle in 1945 tried to do his patriotic duty like his brothers, but his flat feet got him a ticket home—the Army did not want him. A problem with your feet got you bounced, unless there was a national emergency, which is why Trump had a 1-Y classification. 1-Y meant you were not qualified for military service unless the bottom of the barrel was being scraped.
Trump has done some amazing patriotic things, and it costing him plenty of money to do what he is doing.
I don’t see why casting aspersions on someone’s draft classifications during an unpopular war 47 years later has any relevance to the subject at hand.

Yes and Trump’s lottery draft number was 356. In the NYC pool women and children would have been taken before him. He never refused to serve and he got normal student deferments as did thousands of other guys. Its a non starter.
