South Carolina ran up the flag in 1962 to show her defiance of racial integration. Until then it was really the flag of Confederate veterans, the same honorable men memorialized at Arlington in 1915. But in 1948, it became Strom’s flag, his cause which as the years went by became less and less that of the South as a whole, till he gave up on it himself. Maybe this atrocity is a blessing in disguise.
