Fair to who? Do you expect those millions of people who will watch their tax bills go up to consider it fair?
Pretty well compared to the old USSR. Russia is part of the BRIC countries which are countries with major growing economies, with growth rates higher than developed countries.
It’s not about feelings, it’s about making the tax system equitable. My feelings get hurt or I get PO’d often, just like anyone else.
The left is feelings based, minus logic. The current system is broke. So, yes, poor folks will get negative feelings over a flat tax, they would not vote for Carson. chances are the real poor would never vote for a Republican anyway as many tend to be on some democrat program and want to keep them in power.
Now eastforker brings up a national sales tax. I would be fully in favor of that if the income tax went completely away.
Besides the benefits eastforker mentioned, the illegals would also be paying taxes. Foreign tourists and employees would be paying taxes. A persons retirement funds (401K) would also be tax sheltered because it is not being spent. Any money saved would never get taxed until withdrawn. You could sell property at a huge profit, and not get half taken away. It would encourage savings and stock market investing which I think would be healthier for the economy and the banking system. People that get paid in cash under the table would be taxed when they spent it.
The benefits are endless which makes this is actually better than a flat income tax.
If the IRS was abolished they could not be used for political purposes like the current regime is doing. Another plus for a national sales tax.
I do not care which some comes about, just as long as it’s equitable. By the way, I’m with Cruz, but if Carson managed to get elected I would respect him.
Russia's growth is negative, their unemployment is rising, and their bonds are rated as junk. Their economy was fueled by high oil and gas prices and not because of their flat tax. When prices for those took a dive their economy went down with it.
Russia is much stronger economically than under the Soviet regime. WHy did’nt teh USSR do well with all that oil and gas? The point is, Russia has adopted capitalistic economy. Our tour guide in French Riviera pointed out all the best properties have been bought up by Russians. What is hampering Russia is NOT flat tax, it is Putin with his KGB mentality.
That's the funny thing about being "fair". There's always someone who can't see it because they have tunnel vision that only takes in their own situation. Most don't think it's fair that they only get "X dollars" back even though they pay no taxes and are getting a gift.
In order to be "fair" I suppose some think that the progressive tax is the bomb - they're familiar and comfortable with it. After a while, the yokes become natural even though we see others living yoke-less at out expense.
Perhaps a very small portion could just stop getting rebates instead of having to pay their "unfair" burden.
The best way to move from liberalism/communism is to engage all the population with the task of sharing the burden - once someone realizes it is their own resources going to pay expenses, they stop being so generous with the concept of "free stuff". No matter how unfair some may think it, it would be a huge step in moving us in the right direction.
