HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - The views are as different as their political parties.
When it comes to Sarah Palin speaking in Huntsville next week at the New Hope High School graduation, Republicans love it and Democrats don't.
Palin, who ran for vice president on the John McCain ticket in 2008 and the former governor of Alaska, will speak at the Von Braun Center's Propst Arena on May 21.
AL.com reached out to the chairs of the Democratic and Republican parties in Madison County for their thoughts about Palin.
First, from Clete Wetli, chair of the Madison County Democrats:
"I really thought it was a terrible joke or a prank. I think it's absolutely appalling. Surely they could find somebody who would be less divisive and more inspirational for the students. Time and time again, she's really embarrassed herself and also embarrassed the country. I'm not sure what the reason would be they would ask someone like that to speak at a commencement ceremony. I thought it was a joke at first - a really bad joke.
"I thought it was a fake news story. That's the thing I don't understand. Why in the world would you do something like that when she has such a legacy of misquotes and gaffes and on and on and one. Why would the school want to embarrass itself having someone like that speak at the graduation ceremony. To that point, part of what we expect students to do is to follow through with things. She didn't even finish her term as governor and used her 15 minutes of fame to do nothing but enrich herself and carry on this ideological agenda. I think it's a horrible choice."
And from John Como, chair of the Madison County Republicans:
"I think it's a fantastic idea. Why shouldn't she? There is nothing wrong with a strong Republican, conservative woman coming to talk to high school students. The sooner that we get over the fact that there are strong Republican women who have a positive message for our young people - and that could be good politicians and good leaders in our country - the better off our country is going to be.
"I think it's fantastic. I wish I had thought of it myself.
"I'd love to have her come speak to the Madison County Republicans. Whichever one of the students who reached out to have her come needs to be patted on the back and applauded."
Sarah is smarter than Nancy Pelosi and Michelle Obama together...
And she got the history of Paul Revere’s ride completely wrong—oh wait it was the media that didn’t know what they were talking about.
Well she did say “Let’s party like it’s 1773”, that was a big screw up—oh wait the media screwed that up too.
I had someone try to tell me that line about all her F%^& gaffes and I said name one, and they couldn’t.
Couldn't agree more!
I wish I could have had Sarah speak at my high school graduation!
I think Sarah will give a heartwarming and inspirational speech whose focus will be on the graduating students and not on politics.
But why? Didn’t you read the article? She is an embarrassment to America! Why would you want an embarrassment to America to speak in that screechy voice about anything?
Can’t you READ?!?!?!? PDS haZ spoken! ;)
So is my dog, Apollo.
Yes. For the first time ever, they’re having to issue tickets.
WHNT had a Black reporter giving the principle the third degree about who was groin to be paying for transportation, security, etc. Incredibly unprofessional and mean spirited. Embarrassing, really.
Get me the video, if you would. I need a good laugh.
Actually it may have been the school superentendent. Here you go...
Clete was all over the AL.com site spewing hate. Disgusting.
The Democrat chair must get his news from Saturday Night Live!
A squirrel is smarter than Pelosi and Michelle combined.
Hey, Dems in Alabama....SUCK IT!!! You set your State back a couple of centuries with your lynching and church-burnings, and now you can just KMA with a true symbol of liberty coming to Alabama.
Democrats fear strong women. They prefer weaklings like Hillary (who isn’t woman enough to keep her man from cheating on her).
Sarah PAlin embarassed the country when she said if you like your insurance you can keep your insurance. Period...oh no mistake that was Obama.
Aw, bummer. This local to me. I’d love to see her.
We should spread that stuff across the web. Put an Obama Hillary comment credited to Palin on media forums, Things she would never think/say in a million years, then sit back and watch the hilarity ensue as libs trash ‘her vapid stupidity”.
A quick way to make fools of them all while showing the stupidity of the ‘Palin is an...’ memes.
