Given how viscerally offensive and unpopular Willard’s nomination was in 2012 (to Conservatives at least), I was very shocked a strong independent candidacy didn’t arise (I had hopes for Goode, but he never took off).

The whole thing is shocking. It's so obvious -- you're so right -- that we need a second party, because we lack one now. The Republican party, at least in its presidential candidates and too many congressional ones, and mayors to boot, is gaudily "moderate," statist big government driven, the same philosophical foundation as the Democrat party.

I wish the GOP national leadership would recognize it and reclaim the banner of limited government and personal independence, which is what American voters yearn for. But like I said ... I'm not holding my breath.
