I distinctly remember Newt Gingrich complaining on more than one primary night that "Once again, Senator Santorum and I got about two thirds of the votes..."

The number of votes in a primary are irrelevant, Reagan got the most votes in the 1968 GOP primary.

In Virginia Ron Paul took 40% since Newt was not on the ballot. Folks were clearly not enthused and tried to convey the message.
