It is very hard to predict how NH primary elections will turn out since "independent" voters can choose to take a primary ballot from either party. So when one party has no primary challenger they all flock to the other party.
This year it will be the Republicans that get all of the "independents". A lot of them are really unregistered Democrats or liberals so we end up with a mishmash of voters in the primary. A lot of them won't even vote for the candidate they supported in the primary in the general election.
The real Republicans I have spoken to are in no mood for Mitt Romney. He's got the support of the professional political types, since they are smart enough to hedge their bets, and he's got money to spend. He also will appeal to the "independents" - particularly the liberals heading for the Republican primary. But he is a long way from having real grass roots support.
