Minnesota Poll: Most don't back a Pawlenty run (for President)
Minneapolis StarTribune (aka The Red Star) | 9/29/09 | Rachel Stassen-Berger/Pat Doyle - Staff Reporters

Posted on 09/29/2009 7:11:20 PM PDT by MplsSteve

A majority of Minnesotans don't want to see Gov. Tim Pawlenty run for president in 2012, but nearly as many say they would give him a look if he were nominated, according to a Star Tribune Minnesota Poll.

The poll shows that only 30 percent of adults want to see the two-term governor make a try for the White House three years from now, while 55 percent do not.

But in a mixed message for Pawlenty, 25 percent of Minnesotans said there was a "good chance" they would vote for him if he became the GOP nominee, while another 25 percent said there was at least "some chance" they would vote for him. A solid 43 percent said there was no chance they would vote for a President Pawlenty.

The survey of 1,000 Minnesota adults was completed last week, after Pawlenty had spent months traveling the country to address Republican groups -- appearances that could pay off should he run for president, but which may have irritated some Minnesotans.

TOPICS: Minnesota; Polls
KEYWORDS: pawlenty; pawlenty2012; president
Here's my quick take...

Pawlenty has insinuated that the GOP needs "to grow up" and expand its horizons.

Pawlenty has jumped on the Green bandwagon with his support of ethanol and other "green initiatives".

Pawlenty balanced several Minnesota budgets thru the use of fees - which is a violation of his 2002 No New Taxes pledge.

Pawlenty supported and signed the Minnesota Twins stadium bill - and in the process denied Hennepin County voters the right to hold a referendum as to whether they wanted to be taxed for it.

I can only speak for myself but I'd have a hard time supporting Pawlenty in 2012. If he's our eventual nominee, I'll support him albeit as I did back in 2006 - with my nose plugged and a grimace on my face as I check the box next to hs name.

Comments or opinions - anyone?

My understanding is that he's not as popular as people think he is (won both of his terms by razor-thin margins).

The biggest strike against Pawlenty IMO is...just being him. I don't think he's a full-blooded RINO like Crist is but he's just a cardboard cut-out of the same-old same-old. He's just not an inspiring leader that we need right now.

IMO, because of the destruction wrought by the current sewer RATs, we can’t afford RINOs and re-treads in 2012. Conservatives must find someone with a spine and gonads. NONE of the current and past crop of candidates can fill those requirements!

Amen, brother. Let’s not forget the clean water crap last year. That one cost us 20 cents for every 20 dollars spent in Minnesota. He’s big on light rail too. Other than Bachman or Kline we get RINO Republicans here in Minnesota. Last but not least he was a McCain short list baby.

I’d like to know how many would back “Senator” Al Franken for president. That would be an interesting poll.

He was only elected the first time because of Ventura’s Independence party splitting the vote. MN is still a blue state despite Bachmann’s district. He is a flaming blue blood country club RINO.

In Minnesota they seem to like the most flamboyant candidates, so Franken would suit them just fine.

A majority voted for Franken so it’s no real surprise that a majority would not want Pawlenty as President. Let me know when anything makes sense in Minnesota

I totally agree with your assessment. That’s why I would not support him, and if he is the chosen candidate, I really don’t think I could be bothered to vote for him, either. Man, we are in hard times.

RINO Pawlenty has no chance at the nomination in ‘12, but what if some MittRINOmney type lies his way into it and picks this nerd for vp?

Agreed. If he can barely get over a third of the vote with ACORN and 3,000 dead people voting for him, I'd put him at 25%.
What I want to see is how many would back Bachmann vs. how many would oppose her.
Find out just how infested this state is.

So 50% might vote for him, in Minnesota. I'm not suprised how the Red Star spun this.
