Over the last 8 years, did George W. Bush help or hurt our party? We did see 2 electoral wins, and the first majority win since his dad trounced Dukakis. He helped keep a Democrat out of the White House for 8 years, and stave off out and out John Kerry liberalism, who is probably more liberal than Barack Hussein Obama. however, we got trounced pretty badly on November 4, all across the board, even in Governor's mansions, where Dems managed to do well in 2002. The Dems ranks grew over the '90's, going from 43% of the vote steadily up to 52% of the vote now. He kept us from losing Appalachia, which was starting to go for Clinton stronger than his predecessors. (With the matter of Ross Perot, while most agree he took from conservatives, I'm starting to believe Clinton might still have won 1992, given Bush I's poor approvals in 1992, and if enough Perot voters would have stayed home without him, Bush would still have lost. Clinton did solidify CA, IL, MI, NJ, CT, VT, ME, DE, and PA securely into the Democrat column, even after Perot was gone. Perot was also an abortionist, anti-family, and protectionist, but none the less, may have took from our demographics). Will conservatism survive, now that the brand his been so tarnished by incompetence? Will people see the achievements once the Messiah Hussein sees Iraq succeed, and us come back? One thing President Bush did was to put marriage on the table, which may well be the death knell for the Dems if Prop 8 managed to pass in the most liberal Democrat of Democrat states, California. Bush also kept Texas from even reverting Dem, as Gore, Kerry, and Obama won fewer counties there than Clinton, who won some in northern Texas. Do you think George Bush will have helped our party, or hurt it?
HURT BADLY. Anything positive is relegated to the dustbin of history by his devil-may-care attitude since 2005 in particular. A terrible nominee in 2000
You got any ice? I believe that's gonna leave a mark.
This is what's called damning with faint praise, right?
I agree. And he was on board with all that nonsense about our so called “ownership” society. BS! The only thing many of these people “own” is debt. He and the Chairmen of the Fed should have known that properity doesn’t come from debt, either private or public. Goods and services are paid for by goods and services. This nation was and is awash in a sea of debt and we are paying dearly for it.
who could have beaten Gore in 2000 other than Bush? I’m wondering, and while McCain may have, he’s McCain. He could have been merely a 3rd Clinton term. Lamar Alexander, maybe. Kemp would have been destroyed. I think the problem was Bush was our own Bill Clinton, a young, charismatic southern governor who could win Appalachia and hold the south. Problem is, as we’ve seen for 16, it doesn’t work when being President. Alexander could have held those regions, been an outsider, and not given us potentially 8 years of Hussein.
“He damn near killed the GOP.”
That statement says it all.
Next topic please.
I think he hurt the party.
He didn’t leave a legacy, a VP that would go on to run for president. He didn’t campaign. He didn’t get in front of the cameras and talk with the Americans like Reagan use too and defend his policies, name names for the cause of the financial crisis— i.e. Dodd and Franks.. He tried to shove Amnesty down our throats and belittled the American people that opposed it. He kept reaching out to people like Kennedy. He did some good things but he kept quiet about it and pretty much let the democrats have all the air time knocking him down.
I personally wish he was as tough on the democrats like he was with Al Queda.
Well, only you if you find the prattling of illiterates scintillating.
Now I want to know what in the hell was that smirk of his back in 2000? Did he know he was going to screw us over? Was he thinking, "Boy, you guys really are a bunch of suckers!" If he hadn't been a Republican, conservatives would have demanded to know what it meant.
I've said this for quite a while. The Bush family has been Republican since before any of us were born, and they've always been what they are. Eisenhower wasn't a conservative, he appointed Warren and Brennan to the Supreme Court. Except for Reagan and Goldwater, the GOP has never been a conservative party.
It’s sad, isn’t it.
What’s worse - Gore then or Obama now?
We’ve bounced back before. My husband keeps on saying that it took Carter to give us Reagan.
You should seriously step away from the BDS liberal koolaid. Your entire post sounds like something Keith Olberpud would say.
As titular head of the Party, letting the GOP congressional caucus run loose, and even joining in with them in looting the treasury.
Failing to lead the party on the key 80/20 issues of immigration and energy, letting the Left define these issues so the GOP could not win.
Failing to veto McCain-Feingold thus aborting the democratic process.
Failing to clarify, define and defend his own bloody policies, when they were being distorted and savaged by a hostile press.
Failing to recognize that the 'rat opposition is no longer a "loyal opposition." They have chosen to become the enemies of constitutional governance in America, and he didn't get it.
The 2006 election debacle didn't have to happen, but Bush just didn't think it worth his time to take care of business. As a result, he did harm to the Party and to the Nation, culminating in the unfolding nightmare which began on November 4.
NC has been taken over by northern liberals who moved here for fun and jobs.
From 2000-2004 he helped. Tax cuts, fighting terrorists...once he got re-elected, things began to go downhill.
The public is forgiving to a point, the media hated him and blasted him over and over.
In the LONG RUN, G.W. Bush will be looked at in a positive light for what he did to protect America. Right now, we’re in a tunnel partly because he didn’t fight back.
Learn from the past: don’t suck up to the libs. Fight ‘em. Hard.
Daddy Bush was highly involved in the globilazation/one world movement and Baby Boy Bush has covertly carried on this mission....pushing the North America Alliance...ignoring and even encouraging the immigration mess we have....I believe there is such an inbreeding in Washington of these one worlders that it is going to take one heck of a move to stop it...they are herding us like sheep to the slaughter toward this type of world government....it is like a cancer in our government...and so malignant, I’m not sure there is chemo or radiology or surgery that will remove it....I think Washington has created this cancer, has refused to treat it, has manipulated it’s growth and this precious country of ours is heading toward doom. I know I sound like a doomsday Nelly but I believe this has been happening for a very long time...was pushed into action by Bush 41 and he wanted his plans carried out....thus Bush 43 was elected...Jeb was being primed to also be President....the hatred toward Bush 43 has put a hinge in the getty up of Bush 41’s plans for a Bush dynasty (thank God)....we have to hope and pray that Obama will be equally hated enough not to be re-elected and that the Republican Party will return to it’s conservative roots....it’s the only chance this country has to avoid being sucked into a world government ruled by a very few like George Soros. George Soros is buying up our country...piece by piece...vote by vote.
Anyone who doesn’t know the answer to that question (i.e virtually destroyed the GOP) is clueless.
Any Bushbots still out there?
Bush was no Reagan, clearly. But who is? and in the meantime, being no Reagan he seems to have kept the flying bullets closer to the enemy's home turf than to ours. That's an accomplishment easy to trivialize. The absence of flying ordnance rarely seems remarkable. But I think that it IS in fact remarkable in this case.
