I read that as his score was 80 which was 55% higher than Obama’s.

It’s not a direct comparison.

80% think McCain can lead vs. not
55% think Obama can lead vs. not

Awkward wording by the “source.”

They were actually phrased as two separate questions. If you look at each question, the sum of the percentages is <100%.
