Can He Do It? Yes He Can! (Fred in Iowa)

Ok, yeah I have small children. But that’s beside the point.

I think Fred Thompson has a strong shot at 2nd place in Iowa. I don’t want to get my hopes up too high because it is more likely that he will finish 3rd. But if, as I am getting from the news coverage, this McCain, Huckabee, Romney food fight on the airwaves in Iowa is souring voters to those candidates, Fred Thompson could be the beneficiary of that sentiment. Going negative in Iowa has always carried risks and Iowa is the place where dark horses rise to the top.

Steve Gill, a syndicated talk host based out of Tennessee and a long time observer of Fred Thompson as well as the author of “The Fred Factor,” said that he’s getting a surge as people are seeing and talking to him. Four years ago, Howard Dean was the heir apparent to the Democratic nomination for President and John Kerry was the guy that was almost out of money — or out of all Theresa would give him at the time. On that snowy night four years ago, John Kerry came from about 1% in the polls to winning the Iowa Caucuses. If there was going to be an upset that night, the “pundits” thought it would be a win for John Edwards. Nobody and I mean nobody thought that John Kerry would be the guy. It could be that kind of night for Fred Thompson.

Fred Thomson is a very strong candidate. Voters are beginning to get the sense that the mainstream media elite, even perhaps Fox News, are afraid of a Thompson candidacy because, as many have pointed out, the man breaks the mold on campaigning. But the hard work that Fred has been putting in on the ground in Iowa has not eluded new media orgs like Politico.

In recent days, Fred Thompson has become increasingly aggressive as he tries to build his support in Iowa by taking it out of the Republican right flank, particularly from front-runners Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Irrelevant opining about inaccurate media polls omitted.

[…]

it appears from campaign events that his remaining potential supporters are hard-core conservatives — people deciding between him and the two GOP front-runners, especially Huckabee.

Bill Salier, for example, served as Tom Tancredo’s state chairman before the Colorado congressman dropped out of the race.

A staunch conservative, Salier’s top two issues are abortion (he is strongly against abortion rights) and immigration (he wants to stem the influx of undocumented immigrants).

Tancredo, then, was a natural fit, and Salier committed to him before Thompson entered the race.

But when Tancredo dropped out and endorsed Mitt Romney, Salier didn’t follow.

To Salier’s mind, the former Massachusetts governor was too soft on abortion and immigration, so he joined Thompson’s campaign.

Since then, he has been on the trail for Thompson in Iowa, introducing the candidate at a supporter’s house in Hampton on Sunday and at a radio town hall Monday morning in Charles City.

Despite recent polls, Salier contends that conservative voters who have flocked to Huckabee are beginning to shift toward Thompson as they become more familiar with Huckabee’s views.

“People are starting to recognize there’s some liberalism there, some populist statements,” Salier said about Huckabee.

Read the whole article for the complete context.

Fred Thompson remains the dark horse and a total long shot for the nomination. But I think that the support that he has gained from conservative activists is impressive. See an up-to-date list here.

Fred’s greatest strength are his well-developed positions on the critical issues of our time. I invite you to read them for yourself. After all, the media and hack pundits like Tammy Bruce certainly aren’t going to tell you about them.

Fred’s future depends upon the activism of those who support him, at this point. Ground troops mean a heck of a lot in Iowa, same with New Hampshire. The most ugly truth is that Romney, McCain, and Rudy snatched up most of them over a year ago. Huckster attracted more to the party, but really, what Fred needs most now, are advocates for him on the ground in New Hampshire.

I really think with the new paradigm in the primary cycles, New Hampshires choices are not going to count for much other garning more New England money. Don't ask me why. LOL The Republican and even perhaps the Democrat nominations, I believe, are going to be brokered at or just prior to the conventions.

Is there a new rule or what? There are thousands of links to candidate contribution sites. Why would a moderator feel the need to remove mine now?

I agree with some of your thoughts, but a primary victory in Iowa or New Hampshire is like infusing the campaign with $50 million in free advertising. Yes, a well funded campaign can ignore these races, but for the little guys, it’s critical.

Rush silently bumped him by knocking down the Huckster.

GO FRED! Let’s get you up there to be one on one against Romney for the rest of the early primary!

All you folks from Iowa fighting for Fred - we are with you!

Don’t let someone buy the election and don’t let the frauds win. Never forget the rotten things McCain has done and let’s make it a conservative banner day!

There is only one man, one statesman in this race that is not lusting for power but humbly rising to serve his country.

Go FRed GO!

We will probably all have underestimated Fred. I am writing this as Romney is on his commercial trying to be strong about illegal immigration, not addressing his own free pass he gave the illegals that worked for his very home. I guess thanks are in order to Rudy for bringing this to light.
