Thompson certainly came across as authentic - and his grasp of foreign policy issues gives lie to the contention that those with executive experience have a leg up or superior background for the job as president - which falters in the job where the president has the most sway - foreign policy and defense.

This is a key point and worth repeating -- mayors and governors have executive experience; congresspeople have foreign policy experience. Since we don't have any candidate who has both in meaningful measure, I'll take the latter.

On the domestic side, he strongly favored a federalist approach to the issues of abortion and gay marriage - leaving it to the states - which may not please base members and may create problems as gay couples go from state to state.

Then let them move to a state that best matches their views. Thompson is correct.

Will Fred Thompson's Strong Fake Federalism Pass Muster With the Base?

There. Fixed it.

There is nothing "federalist" about abrogating the God-given rights to life and liberty.

I’ll never cast a vote for Fred Thompson for anything. Or Rudy Giuliani. Or Mitt Romney. Or John McCain. Or Mike Huckabee. Or Ron Paul.

These men don’t even believe in the God-given, unalienable rights to life and liberty.

As the Declaration of Independence asserts, the protection of those rights is the reason we even have government.

To hell with the lot of them. And the Republican Party, if the GOP is going to tear the heart out of the Reagan platform.

If you haven't watched today's Meet The Press, please do so.

Or read the transcript.

BTW -- where is the video? Could you please post a link to it. Thanks. MSNBC had the transcript, but only had the Brokaw part of the MTP interview. Maybe they'll post the part with Fred later, but if it's available somewhere now, please post it. Thanks.

“Ironically his soothing persona seemed to lull Russert somewhat who wasn’t in his more confrontational mode with Thompson “

Interesting that it should be put this way. This is precisely one of the reasons I think Fred would be just what the doctor ordered for this country right now.

I believe authinticity is his finest quality. I believe he thinks before he opens his ideas up for debate. That is the quality I want in my President. I can't see that in Rudy or Mitt or Huckabee and I certainly don't see it in McCain. I hope and pray the next debate will concentrate on immigration and homeland security. Then you will see the separation of the men from the boys.

Fred will come out on top.
